President Joe Biden has been under a lot of pressure to make a definite move about migration in the United States of America. On Tuesday, June 4th, he made an announcement that is quite controversial to some, stating that he would stop migrants from being able to be granted asylum if they cross the border illegally.

The migration crisis in the U.S. increased significantly over the past few years. Therefore, the President has been under immense pressure from various angles to stop migrants from entering the country illegally. In a recent announcement, Biden said that he was stopping illegal migrants from applying for or getting asylum in the country. However, some experts worry that this solution could create another problem within the economy.

Biden’s Executive Actions

In a bid to make the border more secure, Biden announced some executive actions that could reduce the high rate of illegal border crossings earlier this week in a White House press statement. The statement also notes that these executive actions would be implemented whenever the country experiences an overwhelming surge, such as this current wave of illegal immigration in the U.S.

The statement also noted that the president believes he has been blamed unjustly for the surge in immigrants over the past few months. This is because he believes that the Republicans who stopped border funding had a huge impact on the crisis. It also said Republicans in Congress put their political interests ahead of national security, thereby worsening the situation for all.

Criticism from Democrats

Unsurprisingly, many people from all over the country have criticized Biden’s executive actions. Some even believe that the move was very unlike him and more like what Donald Trump will do. An attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union, Lee Gelerent, noted that he has considered suing the Biden administration over this bold move.

Criticism from Republicans

Surprisingly, Republicans are also criticizing Biden’s move despite their push to get him to use his executive power for months. Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson said that the executive order actions seemed convenient and that the Biden administration was responsible for opening the border up to so many immigrants in the first place. Therefore, he believes that this move is coming very late.

Economists Point of View

However, while Biden is occupied with the political implications of his decisions, experts believe that he should be more worried about the impact on the economy if they are successful. Chloe East, an economist at the University of Colorado, believes that reducing border crossings will have a huge impact on the economy. As Biden is weak on the economy in the eyes of voters, it may also affect his re-election prospects.

A Tough Choice

Biden already lacks support from the voters who believe his tenure worsened the economy. Since almost half of the job growth since October was a result of cheap labor from immigrants, cutting this off will definitely have a negative impact on the economy. Therefore, the President is in a very tough place as it may be a choice between the economy and the immigration crisis.

The Economy Is a Top Priority

The battleground states were thoroughly surveyed in April, and reports found that economic issues were the highest-ranked issue in those regions before the presidential election. In Michigan alone, about 80% of the surveyed voters recorded the economy as their major issue. Similarly, Pennsylvania and Washington also recorded high percentages of voters who believed that the economy was their top concern.

Negative Perceptions

Since most people have many negative feelings about the economy under Biden’s administration, it is important for the president to win over their hearts and turn that perspective in his favor. Many voters are looking to elect a candidate that will help boost the economy make it favorable for them, and answer all the tough questions that will help make the economy much better.

Economic Output Boost

While the immigration crisis has a huge impact and strain on the budgets of states and cities across the country, it also helps to boost economic output. According to a report by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), the United States’ gross domestic product (GDP) is predicted to have an extra $7 trillion over the next ten years. This is attributed to the high influx of migrants.

Increase in Inflation

The surge in immigrants will increase economic growth but will also have a negative effect on inflation, according to the CBO. Another possible negative effect is that the wage growth in the country could be very slow since most immigrants work at really low rates. If inflation continues to rise without an equal rise in pay, the citizens will feel the impact, and the economy might not seem better.

Biden Is Not Pleasing Anyone

Biden’s executive actions seem like a situation in which he cannot please everyone at once. In fact, he doesn’t seem to be pleasing anyone at all with this move. Not only is he facing backlash from conservatives, but he is also facing criticism from his fellow Democrats. Therefore, economists advise that the next four months and more will show whether this move will be successful or not.
