Disneyland Expansion

Disneyland is set to have its largest expansion since its initial opening in the 1950s! This is exciting news for fans of the make-believe world, as that means more dreamy places to explore. Although Disney officials believe Disneyland will never be complete, the fans of the fantasy world are always happy to hear about a new space being developed.

Keeping the Magic in the Family

Disneyland always sees a lot of investors, as many hope to make quick profits off the brand’s name. However, the descendants of Walt Disney are eager to keep the “magic” of the brand in the family. While investors wouldn’t care much about their family-built values, these descendants are willing to keep them by passing on several investors who don’t match their values.

Disney Will Use Its Own Land

The fantasy land in California will be the main point of expansion. It currently covers an impressive 550 acres, but this is only 2% of the land that Disneyland already owns. Therefore, the expansion will take place without Disneyland buying new land. Rather than using its available space to build hotels and parking lots, the company will now use it to build theme parks for fans.

Project ‘DisneylandForward'

The company has branded this project as ‘DisneylandForward’ and will commence really soon. It is also unlikely that the company will need any public funding for this project to be a success. According to sources, most of this expansion will happen on the west side of the resort, which is also around the Disneyland Hotel and the Pixar Place Hotel.

Expansion At Different Points

Another significant part of the park will also be expanded. The southeast side of Disneyland will also undergo expansion changes, and they will build theme parks, dining and shopping areas, and other forms of entertainment. The southeast wing is at Katella Avenue and Harbor Boulevard, where the Toy Story Parking Area is currently situated.

The $1.9 Billion Cost

This expansion is huge and will cost the Disneyland executives a whopping $1.9 billion. It will increase Disneyland’s capacity from 25 million to about 40 million. With this huge increase, they could easily make this money back from ticket sales, merchandise, and food spent around its different restaurants.

Creating 13,500 New Jobs

This expansion will also create many job opportunities in the park. As the expansion takes place gradually, it will create about 13,500 new jobs over the next few decades. This number is a rough estimate of workers, including the builders, the entertainment performers, the shop workers, and those working in the food areas and restaurants.

Millions Generated Every Year

Disneyland’s plan is quite detailed, and with its high investment, it must see returns. Therefore, the company expects to generate about $15 million in revenue every year for every $1 billion that it invests in the expansion plan. This revenue will be directed toward Anaheim, a city in California, and will fund important infrastructure such as parks, libraries, fire, and police departments.

City Approves Plans Twice

Disney’s plans for expansion had to be approved two different times by the Anaheim City Council. The first was in April, while the second was early in May, with both approvals occurring in 2024. The second bite was unanimous and gave the goal the green light for the project. In June 2024, the plan will finally go into full effect.

Rising Concerns

The locals in California are already facing a surge in housing prices and are now even more worried with the thought of Disney’s expansion. However, Disneyland is well aware of the potential impact, and the executives have announced a $100 million investment that will lead to road improvements and enhance affordable housing in California.

Disney’s 40-Year Promise

The expansion is no easy task, and it will take place over the course of 40 years. Therefore, the company has made a 40-year commitment to the city of Anaheim as well. It will pay $40 million to use two streets that the city currently owns. In addition, Disneyland will pay $8 million for city parks, satisfying both the state and its residents.
