President Joe Biden’s first term is coming to a close soon. However, the pressure he faces continues to grow as over 80 Democrats have sent a pressing letter to the president.

A Critical Time

The 2024 November election is almost here, and with it comes a lot of pressure. In recent news concerning the current president, he has received a letter from over 80 Democrats across the country asking him to take urgent action to help immigrants who are undocumented. This letter comes at a delicate time, as the general public seems to be against how Biden is handling the immigration crisis.

The Letter By Democrats

The contents of the letter primarily address the immigration crisis in the country, asking Biden to use his executive power as elections approach. The Democrats, via the letter, urge the Biden administration to “take all available actions to streamline pathways to lawful status for undocumented immigrants” in the country and curb the immigration surge in the process.

Benefits of Immigrants

In the letter, the Democrats advocated for these undocumented immigrants, citing their monetary contributions to the country. According to them, undocumented immigrants contributed about $9.7 billion in federal and state taxes in 2019 alone. They also contributed over $11 billion in social security, generating huge income for states and the United States of America.

Trump’s Re-election Plans

Biden’s rival in the upcoming elections, Donald Trump, has threatened to deport all undocumented immigrants from the country if he is re-elected into office. Therefore, the Democrats worry that this will have a huge impact on the country’s economy and hurt American families as well. Most Democrats are firmly against Trump’s plan and are asking the current president to make a significant move.

Using Military Force

Former president Donald Trump has been very vocal about his intentions toward undocumented immigrants if he gets back into power. In an interview with Time Magazine, the former president stated that he would use military force against the immigrants and drive them out of the country. In a March rally speech, he also noted that the immigrants are “not people” and he would do all in his power to get rid of them.

Fast-tracking the Process

The Democrats also mentioned fast-tracking the legal documentation process for immigrants. According to them, making the process easy will not only boost the economy but also provide stability to these immigrants. Just like regular citizens, they would pay taxes and be able to have more stable lives in a foreign country. They would also check in with government officials regularly to ensure they do not pose a risk to society.

Democratic Recommendations

The Democrats also mentioned many other ways the Biden administration could help these undocumented immigrants in the country. For those who are married to Americans, Democrats ask that the government allow them to work while their documentation process is still ongoing. This way, families, businesses, and even communities will thrive better than before. Families will also not be forced to separate from their loved ones.

Democratic Representative Reached Out

A Democrat Representative, Nanette Barragan, also sent a separate letter to President Joe Biden. The Rep wrote that this was the best time for him to exercise his “Executive Authority to rebuild our broken immigration system.” Since Biden has been avoiding using his full authority as president on the immigration crisis and border problems, the country is divided by their conflicting opinions of him, with some tagging him as “weak.”

A Recent Survey

A recent survey by Axios in April this year showed that Americans were beginning to welcome the idea of mass deportation for illegal immigrants. The results of the study also showed that two-thirds of Americans believe the immigration crisis in the country is a real problem that needs to be dealt with sooner rather than later. To them, this matter is more than political banter.

Democrats Are Changing Their Minds

According to the Axios survey results, even Democrats are leaning towards mass deportation. 42% of the Democrats that took the survey said they supported the idea of mass deportation, which used to be a thought approved by Republicans. In addition, 30% of the Democrats also said that they would support ending birthright citizenship and taking that right from immigrants.

Biden’s Hesitation

It is clear that Biden is hesitant to make a big move regarding the immigration issue. As it is also an election year, the president is trying to balance things out without using his executive power. In addition, the Biden administration has criticized Trump and Republicans, blaming them for the migration crisis after Republicans killed a bill in February that was going to provide resources to strengthen the border.

A Previous Letter

This letter, signed by over 80 Democrats, is not the first of its kind. In fact, it is a follow-up letter to the president after some Senate Democrats sent him a similar letter in March. Most importantly, they believe Biden has to consider using this executive power to keep the country from ending asylum. If Trump gets his way, Democrats believe that mass deportation will cause the country to move backward rather than forward.
