In a recent development, the former state attorney who was found guilty of fraud has been ordered to relinquish ownership of some properties. This order came from a federal judge who presided over the forfeiture hearing.
Marilyn Mosby, 48 years old, was the state attorney for Baltimore for 8 years between 2015 and 2023. However, her career took a hit following allegations of fraud and perjury. The federal charges were for a false mortgage application related to a Florida purchase while she was in office.
In 2020, during the COVID-19 crisis, Mosby filed hardship claims, giving her access to the city pension fund. On two occasions, she received a total of $90,000 in access to the fund.
However, investigations discovered that the financial hardship claims had been falsified. The investigation disclosed that she had received her full salary during the pandemic. The document showed that instead of reductions during the crisis, her gross income in 2020 was more than that of 2018. She was found guilty of two counts of perjury in November 2023.

Mosby was also charged with two counts of mortgage fraud, over her two vacation homes in Florida. On Tuesday, February 6, 2024, she was found guilty of the Longboat Key charges and not the Kissimmee mortgage charges.
Shortly after the allegations surfaced on Friday, January 14, 2022, there were suggestions about her removal from office. However, during the democratic primary for the attorney position, she lost to Ivan Bate.
In response to the conviction, she said she had done nothing wrong. Reaffirming her innocence claims, she said her actions were legal and she didn’t commit any crime. She claimed that she was a victim of political and racial discrimination during Trump’s tenure as president.
She has written to Biden, requesting a presidential pardon. According to her pardon request, she states that a pardon requires the applicant to show remorse and regret for their actions. However, she claimed her case didn’t require those elements as she was not guilty. She described the situation as one of justice being denied.

She said the pardon would be appropriate. Mosby said she had done nothing illegal or wrong. She said that the idea that she would be separated from her family for decades because she withdrew part of her own money was upsetting.
After she was declared guilty, she faced incarceration for up to 40 years. However, she was sentenced to house arrest for a year with an ankle monitor. She is to spend 100 hours performing community service.
After Mosby’s sentencing on Thursday, May 23, 2024, prosecutors are now asking the government to seize both properties.

She became an important figure in America in 2015 after the death of Freddie Gray, a black kid who died in police custody. She pressed charges against the six officers who had earlier arrested Gray, although none of them were convicted.
This is not the first time she has been on the opposite side of the law. Mosby reported a $45,000 tax lien on one of her Florida properties, despite making approximately $250,000 annually.
