A shocking video shows dozens of asylum seekers lined up in freezing temperatures. The migrants waited in a line in the cold temperatures to renew their stay in New York City shelters. They stood on 7th Street and Avenue B in the East Village.
The migrants waited outside the former St Brigid School, which has become a shelter registering center as the city deals with a massive migrant surge. According to reports, the migrant lines in NYC comprised South American men and families. However, young African men have seemingly replaced them.
According to the migrants, they’ve been waiting in line for days to get temporary housing. This development comes as new records show three million asylum cases are pending in US immigration courts. Hence, exhausted and cold migrants have become a regular sight at St Brigid.
It started when NYC Mayor Eric Adams implemented a 30-day limit for single adults to stay at the city’s shelters. NYC has seen over 140,000 arrive since last year, and Adams’ administration is struggling with the migrant surge. Hence, the Democrat-opposed shelter stays to mitigate the situation.

The city has a right-to-shelter law that demands the city government offer shelter to anyone who asks. As a result, migrants looking to renew their stays have overwhelmed the East Village street. A migrant from Mauritania said he has been waiting for 25 days to get a bed.
In addition, the man revealed that the condition is forcing homeless migrants to sleep on the streets or the subway. He also said most had no choice, as there was nowhere else to go. “People have to wait in line for a place in a warming site, which is not always possible.”

“The problem now is that there is a collapse,” Venezuelan migrant Emerson said. “Before [at The Roosevelt], there were many people, but there was order,” he added. “Here, there’s no order.” Furthermore, he said, “I’ve been outside this shelter for three days.” The Venezuelan migrant also revealed that officials transferred the migrants frequently.
“From here, they send us to another site, then another, and then we end up here again.” Due to the harsh weather, City officials have been telling migrants to spend the night at a shelter in the Bronx. However, many asylum seekers said they prefer to sleep on the streets or train stations near St Brigid. According to the migrants, staying close helps them to be first in line in the morning.
Moreover, some migrants claimed that there were no beds at the Bronx shelter, and they had to sleep on the floor. However, they noted that officials told them to leave at 4 am. The alarming footage underscores Adams’ recent admission that NYC is at a “breaking point.”

According to reports, more than 160,000 migrants have arrived in the city since the spring of 2022. However, the crisis is deepening as Texas continues to bus down migrants pouring over the border. The heartbreaking conditions migrants are facing come after several migrants crossed the U.S. southern border in December.
Between December 1 and December 31, 2023, the government documented 302,000 migrants attempting to cross into the U.S. According to reports, it is the highest total recorded for a single month ever. Also, it marks the first time migrant encounters have reached over 300,000.
