A fast fashion retailer has sparked controversy with its recent social media post. The brand had attempted to run a new body positivity campaign but was met with backlash over the choice of models. The outcry has ended in debate between several individuals across the net.

On Friday, May 31, 2024, Fashion Nova took to their Instagram account to post a photo album with captions. One thing that stood out in the post was its cover photo, which read, “Breaking News: Fashion Nova’s Body Positivity Campaigns Are Going Viral.” While the photo did go viral, it was not in the way the retailers had hoped.

The very images showed 5 models in bikini dresses that the fashion retailer had intended to showcase. The Instagram caption listed a variety of available swimsuits in different sizes, from XS to XL. However, what caught the attention of the public was the model the retailer had used to showcase its merchandise.

While the models had differences in height and skin color, they all had similar body types. Consequently, there was a wave of backlash from viewers who said pictures showed no body positivity. In the comments section of the post, there was a large amount of criticism.

A user had responded under the post that the retailer should make a new campaign showing multiple skin colors and stretch marks. The user also asked if they should show the audience what a natural body looks like. Another user wrote, “Ah no – your XL is still proportioned with a flat stomach & a waist.”

A third comment read, “Wow. Body positivity with everyone that’s the same body type…inspirational.” Another commentator had said that the caption had written body positivity but the models have the same body but different heights.  Another said, “A lot of these thicker women don’t have the typical body type they have flat stomachs lol it’s okay to use more realistic women’s bodies as well.”

Referred to as “plus size,” there have been more requests for body positivity and inclusivity in the fashion industry, in clothes, and on runways. The typical clothing size for women in the US is around a size 14, or a Fashion Nova 1X.

Designer Victoria Beckham eventually added bigger sizes to her eponymous label’s size range, although Victoria’s Secret had only just started to use curvaceous models. Fashion Nova’s post has been shared on various social media platforms, including the Shade Room, which has 29.3 million followers.

On the other hand, Fashion Nova is no stranger to controversy. In 2022, the Federal Trade Commission penalized the label $4.2 million because it had concealed unfavorable product ratings and was obstructing reviews with fewer than four stars from customers.
