In her new documentary series, singer, Demi Lovato opened up about enduring sexual assault at the hands of her drug dealer and getting raped at fifteen.
Singer Demi Lovato has endured her fair share of life travails, including getting raped as a teenager. Fans of the icon may recall her near-death experience in 2018 following a drug relapse. However, there was more to that night than anyone could have imagined.
In her new docuseries titled “Demi Lovato: Dancing With The Devil,” the star narrated her ordeals, which have since left her traumatic.
LOVATO’S DISHEARTENING EXPERIENCE
The 28-year-old recounted how her drug dealer violated her that fateful night in 2018 after she overdosed. Her assaulter allegedly drugged her with heroin laced with fentanyl, and took advantage of her, leaving her for dead afterward. She recalled:
“When they found me, I was naked, blue. I was literally left for dead after he took advantage of me.”
The songstress ended up hospitalized. When asked if she had consensual sex with her violator, the then-traumatized singer said yes. She realized only a month later that she was in no state of mind to make a consensual decision.
ANOTHER ASSAULT ENCOUNTER
Demi Lovato went on to recount a previous traumatizing ordeal she experienced earlier, in her teenage years. The star admitted to losing her virginity at fifteen, in a sexual assault while “hooking up” with the alleged attacker.
She resolved to let go of her addictions for good, and lead a life of sobriety
She recalled having to see the person regularly afterward, leading her to develop an eating disorder. Lovato revealed that she reported the incident to some adults, but none intervened or reprimanded her assaulter. Although the star did not name the attacker in the series, she hinted he was an actor.
SEEKING HELP
Prior to her 2018 relapse, the “Sober” crooner stayed sober for five years, having completed a stint in rehab in 2013. Admittedly, those years of sobriety were not exactly the smoothest for Demi Lovato, but she managed to find some therapeutic outlet through her songs.
Following her relapse, the singer, who became diagnosed with bipolar disorder at 18, went into rehab again. This time, she resolved to let go of her addictions for good, and lead a life of sobriety. She has since remained committed to her recovery journey.
Despite her tumultuous struggles and past assault encounters, the 28-year-old never gave up on love. Admittedly, some of her biggest support came from her love interests, including ex-boyfriend Wilmer Valderrama. In July 2020, Demi Lovato announced her engagement to Max Ehrich, but they called it quits in September that year.
SIMPLY COMPLICATED
This is not the first time Lovato would go candid about her real-life ordeals in a documentary series. In 2017, seven months after celebrating five years of sobriety on Instagram, the star released a docu-series titled “Simply Complicated.”
The YouTube series detailed the songstress’ sobriety journey, from becoming addicted to cutting herself from the age of nine, to her struggles with bulimia.
She revealed in the docuseries that despite making progress in her sobriety journey, food remained her biggest challenge.
Lovato has certainly come a long way in her journey to sobriety, serving as an inspiration to young women living through addictions and trauma.
