As the United States struggles with the illegal migrant crisis, it has overwhelmed major cities in the country. One such city is New York, which, according to reports, is crawling with illegal migrants. Consequently, critics are calling New York City Mayor Eric Adams incapable.

The migrant crisis has cast doubt on the Mayor’s ability to manage the situation. Consequently, critics called his management of the crisis “chaotic.” Also, they doubt his leadership abilities, according to a New York Times feature.

In an article headlined “Chaos, Fury, Mistakes: 600 Days Inside New York’s Migrant Crisis,” The Times interviewed human rights advocates. Also, they interviewed local officials on New York City’s handling of the migrant crisis.

Before the essay, Adams announced in May that the city received over 70,000 migrants. Afterward, Adams, the mayor of one of America’s most recognizable cities, told New Yorkers the migrant crisis will worsen.

He also said it would worsen a budget shortfall and cause suffering for constituents and migrants. In addition, Adams said New York City has spent over $1 billion in addressing the migrant crisis and might need more than $4 billion in funding.

Adams said an increase in migration would “destroy” the city, blaming the Biden administration for not providing federal support. “Never in my life have I had a problem that I did not see an ending to. I don’t see an ending to this,” Adams said. “This issue will destroy New York City.”

In addition, Adams called out Biden for lack of support on the migrant crisis engulfing his city. “We’re getting no support on this national crisis,” he said. Before calling out Biden, Adams publicly claimed a lack of federal assistance on immigration. Consequently, he attracted praise from Republicans.

Also, social services have struggled to provide for the increasing number of migrants arriving in the city since 2022. According to reports, of the migrants who have arrived, more than 50,000 remain in the care of the city.

Consequently, officials said shelters and other resources are at capacity, with approximately 500 migrants coming into New York daily. Due to the influx, Adams started busing migrants to New York Suburbs.

However, officials representing the suburbs rebuked the Mayor’s plan. The Republican executive of Orange County, Steven Neuhaus, told The Times that Adams sent two migrant buses to his county.

However, Neuhaus said Adams did so without making good on his promise to contact him before proceeding. “I never heard anything back,” Neuhaus said. “Soon, two buses of migrants, with New York City police escorts, arrived at an Orange County hotel.”

Similarly, other officials in upstate New York complained about Adam’s plan. They said he did not give them “adequate warning” before sending buses of migrants upstate. “It angered everybody,” Daniel McCoy, the Albany County executive, said in an interview with The Times.

On the other hand, officials like New York City Comptroller Brad Lander directly opposed Adams. Lander restricted “the mayor’s emergency power to contract for migrant services without review.” According to The Times, “His spokeswoman pointed to ‘extensive failures’ by the city.”

In addition, a volunteer aid group executive, Power Malu, called the scenes “fabricated chaos.” According to reports, some migrants “sleep on the sidewalk outside an office to hold their place in line” for shelter.

However, the confusion and overcrowding of shelters in New York City escalated after Adams announced a 60-day limit for stay in shelters. Consequently, migrants’ families and advocates protest Adams’ policy, leading to overcrowding in the streets of New York.

Due to the efforts of Republican Governors, sanctuary cities in the United States have a migrant crisis on their hands. Consequently, some Democrat Governors shifted their stance on open border policies. However, the skyrocketing migrant population remains debatable, with the public expressing varying opinions.
