People boo comedians during some of their routines, especially those they consider too conservative and anti-progressive. So when Bill Burr went all out in making anti-liberal jokes about sensitive topics like the war in Gaza and trans rights, nobody thought his audience would allow it.
Add to this the fact that he delivered this performance at UC Berkeley, an institution reportedly filled with free-minded liberals and progressives. The whole routine should have ended in a disaster social media would not have let him forget.
However, the opposite happened. Indeed, the sold-out crowd rewarded Burrs’ liberal-bashing stand-up comedy with roaring applause. It happened on Saturday, and the comedian’s jokes ranged from verbal abuse of his wife to the war in Gaza to transgender rights and even child molestation.
But there was a method to the madness that seemed to make all the difference. He did not attack the audience. Nor did he rail against cancel culture. He delicately toed the line with his jokes, each serving a purpose.

He delivered his piece without bias, making sure the audience knew where he stood politically without trying to alter their already-cemented opinions. He stated categorically that he despised liberals, referring specifically to those he described as white, hypocritical liberals.
Burr talked about political inactivism on the left, claiming their support for the cause was sometimes shallow and for show. He pointed out how some white folks displayed the ‘Black Lives Matter’ signs but avoided the hard work of dismantling white supremacy.
He also mentioned self-proclaimed empaths, describing them as the kind of people who “like making other peoples’ suffering about [themselves].” Burr cautioned the audience to run the other way as soon as a white person outed themselves as an “empath.”

Those were only a few of the subjects he touched upon during his anti-liberal rant. However, despite the focus of his jokes, the crowd responded with laughter and support. That energy even seemed to multiply after he revealed that he had been on psychedelic mushrooms.
Burr also got some gold stars for dragging Silicon Valley’s common enemy, the insufferable tech bros, into the whole affair. He expressed disdain for the “tech bro” term, claiming they are dangerous nerds with barely any social skills who want to replace the country’s workforce with AI.

It earned him even more support from the crowd, and by the time he was done, the progressives of UC Berkeley were all screaming his praise. If you asked someone who attended the show, they would unequivocally say they got their money’s worth. Not at all the expected response, given their agenda as liberalists.
