Yasmine-Imani McMorrin made history as the first Black woman the Culver City Council ever elected mayor. What’s more, the voters chose her unanimously! She is also the sixth female mayor of the beautiful city.

In a Los Angeles Daily News statement, she thanked her colleagues and recognized this historic achievement. She said, “I’m grateful for this opportunity to continue to serve Culver City in this capacity as its newest, historic mayor.

As only the sixth woman — and first Black woman — council member, this moment is not lost on me, and I thank my colleagues for their vote of confidence to lead us through the following year with them and Vice Mayor (Dan) O’Brien.”

McMorrin’s achievement is a result of years of hard work and dedication. She has been serving the city since 2020, when she became a member of its council. This is a massive win for McMorrin and the black community. In 2021, Daniel Lee also made history by becoming the city’s first black mayor.

Therefore, Lee paved the way for the black council members while McMorrin just opened it wide for all genders. However, it is unsurprising that the city has recently begun experiencing black leadership. This is because they had a lot of controversial policies through the decades.

The city is over 106 years old, but its anti-black policies were in place till 2021. After Lee came into power, the city issued a resolution to acknowledge that specific policies had been causing harm to Black residents. Therefore, McMorrin can relate to most of their struggles as a black woman.

In her speech, she also talked about how she looks forward to helping the city in many ways. “In these extraordinary times, our city requires steady, focused, and forward-thinking policies that advance our communities and businesses and protect those who need us the most,” she said.

She hopes to make Culver City more inclusive in the coming years. She said, “I look forward to tackling the challenges ahead and boosting our successes as we work to build a more prosperous and inclusive Culver City.”

Before she ran for mayor, McMorrin was the vice mayor in 2020. Therefore, she has hands-on experience after working closely with the mayor for a long time.

Before she became the vice mayor, she outlined her goals on her website for all to see. She wrote, “I am ready to help transform Culver City into a truly inclusive city. I understand the consequences of systemic racism on Black, Indigenous, and people of color.”

“As a strong leader and problem-solver, I am committed to working with the community to reimagine public safety and community well-being in Culver City,” she continued.

The mayor-elect also has a lot of experience working as an attorney. She studied law at Rutgers University in New Jersey, where she learned everything she needed to know.

Regarding her personal life, McMorrin is a mother who is sensitive and passionate about helping everyone around her.
