Boston Mayor Michelle Wu recently threw a party that stirred up a lot of controversy and criticism. However, last Thursday, the mayor stood by her decision to host a holiday party for elected city council members who are people of color.

The race-based party was discovered after an aide mistakenly sent invitations to everyone, including the seven white members.

“It is my intention that we can, again, be a city that lives our values and create space for all kinds of communities to come together,” Mayor Wu explained her decision. However, her exclusive party seems to contradict her statement. She posted a photo from the party, bragging about breaking down barriers.

However, only people of color were seen in the picture. “Not too long ago in Boston, we didn’t need such a big table to fit electeds of color. But over my time as a City Councilor and now Mayor, following so many leaders who have paved the way, I’ve proudly watched this group grow and create space for mentorship and fellowship among many who are breaking down barriers while holding the weight of being the first or only,” she wrote in the caption.

“Throughout the year, we work to represent our communities with urgency and determination. And at the holidays, we take the time to celebrate and enjoy each other’s company!”

It didn’t take long after the party for the backlash to start. The white councilors who weren’t invited to the party said they didn’t see the segregation favorably. However, they also said that they weren’t offended.

The mayor’s assistant, Denise DosSantos, had sent another email to uninvite the white councilors who were initially invited by mistake. “I wanted to apologize for my previous email … I did send that to everyone by accident, and I apologize if my email may have offended or came across as so. Sorry for any confusion this may have caused,” her email read.

This kind of left-driven segregation is also thriving in academia. These days, there are “black graduations” at colleges such as Harvard, which segregates students of other races. Similarly, an off-campus housing co-op at Berkeley last year created a “Person of Color Theme House.” The house was strictly for people of color and forced students to identify their race while announcing white guests.

Furthermore, NYU hosted an anti-racism workshop for just white public school parents. According to the school, the workshop was to prevent harm to people of color from hearing racist thoughts white people had. One would think such a workshop would include people of color, but it didn’t.

Also, in 2020, a student at the University of Virginia became agitated by white people using the school’s ‘multicultural’ center. The student said, “Frankly, there’s just too many white people in here, and this a space for people of color.”

Admittedly, Americans have the right to do as they please in private. However, thinking that people of color should have exclusive events or facilities is toxic and uncalled for in public institutions. It is unconstitutional.
