The Averett University community was plunged into sorrow when the untimely passing of Dr. David Hanbury, a respected professor from the private Baptist institution located in Danville, Virginia, was confirmed.
The devastating news emerged following Hanbury’s disappearance while attending a conference in Orlando, Florida. Averett University conveyed the heart-wrenching update via a Facebook post on Sunday, revealing that Hanbury’s family had confirmed his demise later that same afternoon.
“It is with a heavy heart that we share the heartbreaking update of the passing of Dr. David Hanbury,” the university’s statement expressed. “On behalf of the entire Averett community, we send our condolences and prayers of support to Dr. Hanbury’s family, friends, and all others upon whom he had a lasting impact.”
The grim turn of events unfolded when officers from the Orlando Police Department responded to a call concerning an unattended death at 450 East Compton Street on Saturday, March 16.

The location, identified as Club Orlando, a men’s club, became the scene where Hanbury’s lifeless body was discovered. While the cause of his death remains undetermined, Orlando Police have stated that there are presently no indications of foul play. Nevertheless, the investigation into Hanbury’s untimely passing remains active and ongoing.
Hanbury, a distinguished senior faculty member in the Pamplin College of Business at Virginia, had attended the Southeastern Psychological Association Conference in Orlando when he disappeared. The last confirmed sighting of him was on the evening of Friday, March 15.
