In the wake of her husband Jeff Baena’s passing, Aubrey Plaza appears to have deactivated her Instagram account. As of Monday, January 13, 2024, Plaza’s Instagram page reads, “Sorry, this page is not available.” In addition, the notice said, “The page may have been removed, or the link you followed may be broken.”
On Friday, January 3, 2025, Plaza’s husband, Baena, a writer and filmmaker, passed away at the age of 47 from suicide. In response to his passing, Plaza and Baena’s family released a statement confirming his death and asking for privacy.
The statement read, “This is an unimaginable tragedy. We are deeply grateful to everyone who has offered support. Please respect our privacy during this time.”
How Long Have Aubrey Plaza and Her Husband Been Together?
Aubrey Plaza and Jeff Baena began dating in 2011, much to the public’s ignorance. Consequently, it shocked and surprised the world when, in a May 2021 Instagram post, Plaza referred to him as her “darling husband.” It was during this period that the world became aware that Plaza and Baena were, in fact, married.
In the post, Plaza wrote, “So proud of my darling husband, Jeff Baena, for dreaming up another film that takes us to Italia to cause some more trouble.” A representative subsequently confirmed to PEOPLE that the couple had tied the knot in a private event in Italy. As of the time of Baena’s passing, the couple had been together for over 14 years.

Speaking with GQ in November 2022, Plaza said, “I’ve been with my husband for 12 years. I relate to being in a relationship that has peaks and valleys, and going through a rough patch and comparing yourself to another couple that seems perfect.”
Who was Aubrey Plaza’s Husband?
Jeffrey Lance Baena, born on June 29, 1977, was an American screenwriter and film director. In a 2016 interview with Fast Company, Baena stated that he was born and raised in Miami. He stated that it was his upbringing in Miami that exposed him to movies and its culture at an early age.
Following his graduation from New York University’s film school, Baena relocated to Los Angeles to start his career in entertainment. After moving into an apartment in Los Angeles, Baena began seeking jobs as an assistant. During his time as an assistant, he worked with filmmakers David O. Russell and Robert Zemeckis before branching out independently.

In 2014, Baena made his directorial debut by writing and directing the zombie comedy “Life After Beth.” Following his directorial debut in 2014, Baena went on to direct a number of movies, including “Joshy,” “Horse Girl,” and “Spin Me Round.”
Speaking on many collaborations with Baena, Aubrey Plaza said, “I think that when you are with someone that is in your field, they understand what you are dealing with on a deeper level. Thus, it is clear that you can help one another and truly comprehend the path we are both on. So I think that can be really great.”
How Did Aubrey Plaza’s Husband Pass?
According to Jeff Baena’s obituary published by the Miami Herald, he died by suicide on January 3, 2025, at the age of 47. In the obituary, Baena was described as “a beloved son, husband, brother, uncle and friend to many.”

The obituary wrote, “Jeff left us too soon, but despite his woefully too-short life, he left us with treasured memories of a gifted filmmaker, as well as a very special person on so many different levels.” Additionally, the obituary covers Baena’s Miami upbringing, his studies at NYU, and his journey to LA to pursue filmmaking.
Honoring his talent for uniting people on and off the movie set, the obituary says, “When he was a boy, Jeff loved reading The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery. Ironically, in it, the Little Prince exclaims, ‘I haven’t much time. I have friends to find and so many things to learn.’ And so it was for Jeff.”
