What would it have been like if Saoirse Ronan was featured in Barbie, 2023’s biggest box office hit? She didn’t, so the answer is best left to our imagination.
However, Ronan stimulated her fans recently when she confirmed that she could have appeared in the movie. The movie’s director, Greta Gerwig, first mentioned this in July 2023, but Ronan admitted that it got her fans talking.
Gerwig had revealed to CinemaBlend that she was annoyed about Saoirse Ronan’s and Timothée Chalamet’s failure to make it into the Barbie show. Gerwig disclosed that she had reserved a “specialty cameo’ for the duo.
According to Gerwig, Ronan couldn’t show up because she was engaged with another production at the time. “But it was going to be a specialty cameo,” said Gerwig.

“I was also going to do a specialty cameo with Timmy, and both of them couldn’t do it, and I was so annoyed,” she confessed.
She, however, concluded by reassuring them of her love despite their unavailability for the movie project. “I love them so much,” she said. “But it felt like doing something without my children. I mean, I’m not their mom, but I sort of feel like their mom.”
About half a year later, movie buffs would finally hear Ronan’s take on the issue.
During a recent interview with popular entertainment magazine Variety, Ronan confirmed what Gerwig had earlier disclosed. Even more excitingly, the Lady Bird and Little Women star also revealed what character she would have played if things worked out as planned.
“I don’t know what [Timothée] was going to be, but I was definitely going to be a Weird Barbie,” she said. “I don’t know how to take that.”

She aroused fans’ imaginations when discussing her planned pairing with Barbie actor Kate. “I would have been with Kate McKinnon, so that would have been nice. I had a scene but didn’t ever get to do it, and it wasn’t in the movie.”
Speaking on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Timothée Chalamet told the story from his own angle. “There was an idea for Saoirse Ronan and I to do a cameo in it,” he confirmed.
But unlike Ronan, Chalamet could only guess what character he might have played. “I don’t know what the cameo would’ve been. I think it would’ve been one of the rejected Kens or Barbies — not Allan,” he stated. “Maybe there was a reject French one along the way. I don’t know what that would’ve been.”

Ronan and Chamalet both starred excellently in two previous projects, Lady Bird and Little Women. Little wonder it was Gerwig’s dream to have both stars add some brightness to the Barbie movie.
However, Chalamet compensated for his inability to participate in the project by on the set of the movie to say “hi.” Another massive compensation for Gerwig would be the movie’s tremendous success at the box office, bringing home more than a billion dollars.
But we will never know how much flavor a Saoirse Ronan weird Barbie role could have supplied.
