Andrew Garfield has explained why he quit gymnastics at the age of 12. In a new interview with Esquire magazine, the “Spider-Man: No Way Home” actor revealed why he gave up the sport.

He described this decision as his first act of defiance against his father’s value system, which stressed success and gold medals over joy, comfort, and pleasure. Garfield’s father was a swimming coach when he quit gymnastics. He also tried swimming but quit.

The actor explained that it felt like a Truman Show experience, where he sensed there was something more out there. He couldn’t identify what that “more” was, but he knew it existed. He added that if it didn’t exist, he would be in big trouble.
