The mayor of a Florida town has resigned with a rather unusual approach, detailing his reasons in a letter to city residents. According to the letter, the mayor detailed a series of corrupt behavior patterns from the city’s government.

On Wednesday, June 17, 2024, Jim Rostek, the former mayor of Madeira Beach, had an interview with Fox 13. Rostek claimed that everything that was happening in the town was very wrong. Rostek said that although he was sad that he had to leave, it was for his well-being.

However, he asked the town residents to keep fighting and doing the right thing, as he would endeavor to always support them. The former mayor’s corruption claims were linked to Robin Ignacio Gomez’s discretionary and discriminatory code enforcement. Gomez is the City Manager for Madeira Beach

The letter was sent and delivered to residents on Sunday, June 14, 2024. According to the letter, Rostek resigned because he could not work with Gomez as city manager. He claimed that he had no interest in being part of Gomez’s corrupt behavior, deceit, bias, or discrimination.

Additionally, he declared that he could not bear the constant squandering of taxpayer funds and the effort to defend it. Rostek wrote that at the end of one’s life, some will go to heaven and some won’t, but he will always do what is ethical and right.

According to Rostek, he had asked Gomez to implement certain policies, all of which Gomez had ignored. The policy would include the creation of a life jacket policy, a smoking policy, and an official outlawing of phone usage for city boats and vehicle operators during work hours.

Rosek claimed that to have noticed the city sanitation workers on their gadgets during their official work hours. He claimed since Gomez is, in his opinion, “Camp Run Amok,” staff like him. He added that as city officials, they had a duty to serve as role models for the town’s residents.

He asserts that rather than releasing a Request for Proposals, they negotiated many line-item contracts at lower amounts to evade commission approval on projects totaling more than $30,000.

Rostek stated that he is a strong believer in ethics and safety and that the stress of trying to get his former colleagues to act right was affecting his health. However, when Gomez was interviewed, he denied all of Rosteks allegations.
