Americans Think Both Biden and Trump Would Not Make Good Presidents

On Wednesday, a new Gallup poll with interesting results was published. According to the poll, almost 30 percent of Americans don’t think Trump or Biden would make a good president if elected.

This number increased from the previous month when only 25 percent of Americans thought it was not the best idea for Trump or Biden to lead the country. This poll confirms that many Americans feel they have to choose between two candidates even though they see them as unpopular and unlikeable.

According to the Gallup poll, 29% of respondents said that both Trump and Biden would not do well if elected President. Slightly more respondents were convinced that Trump would do a better job than Biden.

35% of the responders said Trump would do a good job, while only 30% said Biden would be good as President.

The Poll’s Methodology

The Gallup poll surveyed approximately 1,000 people over the month of March. It reportedly has a margin of error of four percentage points.

Gallup says the “Results are based on telephone interviews conducted March 1-20, 2024, with a random sample of –1,016—adults, ages 18+, living in all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia. For results based on this sample of national adults, the margin of sampling error is ±4 percentage points at the 95% confidence level.”

The Poll Asked a Question

The poll first asked respondents a question and then compared their responses in 2020 to their responses in 2024.

The question was, “Which best describes your view of Donald Trump and Joe Biden — both would be a good president, neither would be a good president, only Donald Trump would be a good president, or only Joe Biden would be a good president?”

Comparing the Results

Those who answered “only Biden” accounted for 36% of the people in 2020. That number fell to 30% in March 2024 in a negative six-point swing.

By comparison, 33% of respondents answered “only Trump” in 2020, but that number is now up to 35% in 2024. Going by this metric, Trump did better than Biden in the poll.

People Who Voted Neither Increased

The number of people who chose the “neither” option increased by four points since July/August 2020. In 2020, 25% of the respondents voted neither, but it is now 29% as of March 2024.

These poll results highlight the divisiveness Americans continue to feel about their views of Biden and Trump. It has become obvious that an increasing number of people are not happy with either option.

A Comparison of Past Incumbents

Gallup has noted that, in years when incumbent presidents were running, notably in 2004 and 2012, between 8% and 17% of U.S. adults said they thought both candidates wouldn’t make good presidents.

Compared to today, significantly more people are skeptical of both Republican and Democrat nominees during an incumbent general election year.

Partisanship Remains Strong

One result that did not see any significant change is Americans’ belief that their party’s candidate is the only one who would make a good president. 71% of Democrats said only Biden would be a good president, while 77% of Republicans said the same of Trump.

This highlights the obvious division in American politics, where voters see themselves as team members pitted against the opposing party.

What Did Independents Say?

Among independents, the percentage of people who think neither Trump nor Biden would make a good president is slightly higher. The poll found that 42% of independents don’t trust the leadership of either candidate.

This is quite interesting as independents have become the largest political bloc in the United States, with 43% of U.S. adults now identifying as independents.

Doubters on Third-Party Candidates

Those who voted “neither” on whether they think Trump or Biden would make good presidents were more likely to vote for a third-party candidate.

Among “neither” respondents regarding their voting intentions for the November general election, 46% said they would likely vote for a third-party candidate. 17% said they would not vote, while another 33% said they would vote for one of the major candidates.

The Unpopular Candidates

Polls have proven that Donald Trump and Joe Biden are among the most unfavorable and unlikable candidates in U.S. history.

Historically, major party nominees have not been this unpopular, and usually, not both candidates are this controversial.

The Wrong Direction

In November, an ABC News/Ipsos poll found that 76% of Americans believe the country is on the wrong track. The poll also found that both Democratic and Republican candidates were viewed broadly negatively.

Meanwhile, 95% of Republicans polled thought the country was headed in the wrong direction, 76% of independents agreed, and a 54% majority of Democrats agreed.
