Former Representative Liz Cheney warned the United States Supreme Court about its handling of former President Donald Trump’s claims of presidential immunity.
The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear arguments on April 25. Trump’s legal team argues for presidential immunity. They claim it should protect him from charges. These charges are related to alleged interference in the 2020 election results.
The DOJ charged Trump last year. They accused him of trying to overturn the 2020 election results. This included the January 6 Capitol riot. He’s also accused of sending false electors to key swing states. Trump has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Trump argues he was acting officially and cannot be charged. Critics counter he was acting as a candidate, not an official. Cheney, a former Republican representative, warned the Supreme Court while speaking at Drake University’s Annual Bucksbaum Distinguished Lectureship.

“When [Trump] now promotes the idea that a president should have complete immunity against any criminal prosecution for anything he does in office and has appealed to the Supreme Court, I think it’s very important that the Supreme Court recognizes that what he’s doing is a delaying tactic,” Cheney said.
“It cannot be the case that a president of the United States can attempt to overturn an election and seize power and that our justice system is incapable of holding a trial and holding him to account before the next election.”

Cheney said she trusts the court will “deal in a responsible and expeditious fashion with this appeal.” However, she added that the court’s action would result in further delay in the public’s seeing evidence and amount to “suppression of the evidence.”
She said, “The American people have a right to see that evidence, and the court ought to recognize that.”
Newsweek emailed the Supreme Court’s public information office and Cheney’s The Great Task PAC for comment. The account Republican Voters Against Trump shared a video of her remarks on X, previously known as Twitter. It had garnered over 150,000 views.

Cheney served as the representative for Wyoming’s At-Large Congressional District from 2017 to 2023. Following the January 6 riot, she was among the 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump for his purported involvement, drawing the former president’s wrath.
Despite her vocal opposition, Cheney lost the GOP primary election in 2022 to Trump-backed Representative Harriet Hageman by a margin exceeding 37 percentage points. Nonetheless, she continues to criticize Trump and his expanding influence within the Republican Party.
