Former New York Mets and Yankees baseball legend Darryl Strawberry is currently recuperating at SSM Health St. Joseph Hospital after suffering a heart attack.
Mets spokesman Jay Horwitz revealed the news on Tuesday, disclosing that Strawberry was struck by the health scare on Monday, just a day before his 62nd birthday. Despite the alarming incident, Strawberry himself took to Instagram to reassure fans, posting a photo from the hospital and expressing gratitude for the swift medical response.
He credited the medical team at St. Joseph West in Lake St. Louis for their prompt action and successful stent procedure, which he attributes to restoring his heart to full health. Horwitz assured concerned fans that Strawberry, who resides in O’Fallon, Missouri, is currently resting comfortably as he recuperates from the ordeal.
Strawberry’s health scare comes at a poignant time as the Mets plan to honor him by retiring his iconic No. 18 jersey on June 1, following the retirement of Dwight Gooden’s No. 16 on April 14.
