Authorities in Louisiana reported that a previously convicted sex offender was fatally stabbed at a laundromat by a woman he allegedly attempted to assault. On Sunday afternoon, Nicholas Tranchant, 40, walked into the Lacombe-area laundromat armed with a “sharp weapon” and tried to sexually assault a woman, according to a press release from the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office.
The unnamed woman fought back and grabbed the weapon, using it to “stab [Tranchant] before fleeing to safety,” authorities said.
According to the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office, investigations unveiled that Tranchant, a known convicted sex offender, had entered the laundromat armed with a sharp weapon and had purportedly initiated a sexual assault against the woman. However, “The female was able to gain possession of the weapon and used it to stab him before fleeing to safety,” the department wrote in the release.
The woman sustained injuries during the altercation and was subsequently transported to an area hospital for medical treatment. “I want to compliment this brave woman on the courage and strength she showed in fighting back against her attacker and ask for prayers for her continued recovery,” Sheriff Randy Smith said.

“I was a little shocked of how it all happened,” said Lacombe resident Dusin Palmisano. Palmisano learned what happened the next day. According to the sheriff’s office, Nicholas Tranchant, 40, walked into the laundromat with a sharp weapon and tried to assault the woman sexually. She fought back, got the weapon, and stabbed Tranchant.
“It’s great that she was able to turn the tide and defend herself,” said Palmisano. Tranchant was taken to the hospital, where he died. According to the sheriff’s office, the woman was also injured and taken to the hospital. She’s expected to recover fully.
“I want to compliment this brave woman on the courage and strength she showed in fighting back against her attacker and ask for prayers for her continued recovery,” said Sheriff Randy Smith in a statement. “It’s horrible to hear something like that, could have went way worse for the victim,” said Palmisano.

According to his last registered address, he lived less than half a mile from the laundromat. According to the Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections, Tranchant followed his release conditions and had met with probation and parole officers 11 times.
“I was thinking of my wife for instance going to do laundry and having that situation,” said Palmisano. Palmisano says something like this, happening so close, causes some uneasiness.
“That’s nerve-racking,” said Palmisano. According to the sheriff’s office, the woman who was attacked will not be charged with any crime.

The deceased, identified as Nicholas Tranchant, had a history of convictions related to sex crimes, according to the sheriff’s office. Court records show Tranchant was convicted in Louisiana in July 2003 on a felony charge of indecent behavior with a juvenile and later, in May 2008, for Attempted Aggravated Rape and Aggravated Burglary. Tranchant was released from jail on those charges on Dec 21, 2023, the sheriff’s office reported, and by law, required to register as a sex offender for life.
