Hunter Biden, the son of President Joe Biden, has been a target of Republican criticisms. There have been allegations of corruption and nepotism concerning his foreign business dealings in Ukraine while his father was vice president under the Obama administration. These accusations were escalated during the impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden’s Ukraine dealings.
Republicans also argued that Joe Biden had pushed the Ukrainian government to dismiss a prosecutor investigating a company employing Hunter Biden. Hunter Biden testified before the House Oversight and Judiciary Committees on Wednesday to address the ongoing investigation into his business affairs.
He addressed the queries regarding allegations that his father directly profited from and influenced his foreign business deals in China and Ukraine. In his opening statement, Hunter dismissed the claims, describing it as “MAGA-motivated conspiracies.” “For more than a year, your committees have hunted me in your partisan political pursuit of my dad,” Hunter’s opening statement read, as shared with Newsweek by his legal team.
“You have trafficked in innuendo, distortion, and sensationalism—all the while ignoring the clear and convincing evidence staring you in the face. You do not have evidence to support the baseless and MAGA-motivated conspiracies about my father because there isn’t any,” he added.

Dan Goldman, a lead counsel for the Democrats during Biden’s impeachment trial, aligned with Hunter’s testimony. In a recent interview, Goldman said that Hunter’s opening testimony provided clarification regarding his business dealings in Ukraine. It also debunked the notion of any wrongdoing on the part of the Bidens.
“That first hour of this much-anticipated testimony was the nail in the coffin to what is a complete bogus and sham impeachment inquiry,” Goldman told reporters during a break of the hearing. “Not only were they unable to show any connection between Hunter Biden’s business and President Biden, but Hunter Biden gave very detailed and clear explanations as to what his arms-length business transactions were private parties and foreign countries.”

Other prominent democrats viewed Hunter’s testimony as an opportunity to criticize the Republicans’ allegations. Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez didn’t hold back when she labeled the investigation a “deep-sea fishing expedition.” Her remarks emphasized her opinion that the investigation was an unwarranted effort by Republicans to uncover damaging information.
Supporting Ocasio-Cortez’s opinion, Representative Eric Swalwell expressed a similar view. On the Republicans, he commented, “They’ve got nothing, that’s what we just witnessed for the last hour.” Some Democrats believed the investigation lacked substantive evidence and was merely a ploy to discredit President Joe Biden and his family.

They have called that the investigation be dismissed, seeing that it is a politically motivated witch hunt. Before Hunter Biden’s testimony, Representative James Comer, chair of the House Oversight Committee, addressed reporters, stating, “We’re deposing Hunter Biden because he’s a key witness in our investigation of Joe Biden,” he said. “Our committees have unearthed substantial evidence of President Biden and his family’s corruption,” Comer added.
On the other note, Hunter Biden is also facing federal gun charges for allegedly lying about his drug use when buying a firearm in 2018. The Department of Justice is also investigating claims of his tax evasion. However, Hunter Biden has pleaded not guilty to both sets of charges.
