Georgia Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene found herself embroiled in controversy on Saturday after making disparaging remarks about Admiral Rachel Levine, the first openly transgender federal official confirmed by the US Senate.
Levine, serving as the assistant secretary for Health for the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) since 2021, has been a vocal advocate for gender-affirming care for individuals undergoing puberty, a stance aligned with the priorities of President Joe Biden’s administration.
Greene, known for her staunch conservative views, has been actively opposing transgender-related policies and initiatives, joining a broader Republican effort to restrict LGBTQ+ rights across the country.
In a tweet on X, formerly Twitter, Greene responded to a video featuring Levine produced by the HHS for Black History Month. The video aimed to shed light on the disproportionate impact of climate change on the Black community.

“Here is a man pretending to be a woman and claiming the climate is hurting Black Americans more than others. This is the Democrat Party. Mental illness on full display,” Greene wrote in her tweet, sparking widespread backlash.
Social media users swiftly criticized Greene for her comments, condemning her remarks about Levine and the transgender community at large. One user highlighted Levine’s distinguished career, contrasting it with Greene’s controversial statements.

Others called out Greene’s alleged hypocrisy, referencing her associations and past behavior. Some criticized her lack of inclusivity and acceptance toward individuals different from her, suggesting that embracing diversity could benefit her constituents.
Another user slammed Greene for spreading hate toward transgender people and urged for accountability for her actions. Meanwhile, some questioned Greene’s alignment with Christian values, accusing her of hypocrisy and failure.

Greene’s remarks elicited a wave of condemnation on social media, highlighting the ongoing tensions surrounding LGBTQ+ rights and the divisive rhetoric employed by some conservative figures. As debates over transgender rights continue to intensify, Greene’s comments underscore the challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community in their fight for equality and acceptance.
Despite the criticism, Greene has not issued a public apology or retraction of her remarks. The incident serves as a reminder of the need for respectful discourse and understanding, particularly on sensitive issues like gender identity and LGBTQ+ rights.
