Lily Gladstone made history at the Golden Globes last Sunday by becoming the first person who identifies as indigenous to win the award for best performance by a female actor in a dramatic motion picture during the ceremony.
Gladstone achieved this historic win for her performance in the Martin Scorsese-directed drama “Killers of the Flower Moon,” where she shares the screen with Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro.
During her acceptance speech, Gladstone emphasized the historic significance of the win, stating, “This is a historic one. It doesn’t belong to just me. I’m holding it right now with all my beautiful sisters.”
She commenced her speech in the Blackfeet language, expressing gratitude to the Blackfeet Nation, describing it as the “Beautiful community, nation that raised me and encouraged me to keep going, keep doing this.”

Lily Gladstone thanked her mother, who attended the ceremony, acknowledging her efforts. She expressed, “My mom, even though she’s not Blackfeet, worked tirelessly to get our language into our classrooms, so I had a Blackfeet language teacher growing up.”
Gladstone expressed her appreciation for being able to speak “a little bit” of her language, highlighting the challenges faced by native actors in the industry. She mentioned that in the past, native actors would speak their lines in English, and then sound mixers would reverse them to simulate native languages on camera.
