President Joe Biden has decided to drop out of the 2024 presidential election, endorsing Kamala Harris in his place as the Democratic candidate. Subsequently, after the news broke, messages and statements have poured in from world leaders.
President Biden Announces His Withdrawal
Biden’s decision comes in the wake of Trump’s assassination attempt in Bulter, Pennsylvania, on Saturday, July 13, 2024. During Trump’s rally in a key swing state, Trump was attacked and shot at. Consequently, world leaders have come out to rally around Trump in the wake of the failed assassination attempt.
In June 2024, CNN held a presidential debate in which Biden and Trump participated. However, Biden’s performance had created a negative lasting memory, causing American and foreign leaders to ask Biden to drop out of the race. On Sunday, July 21, 2024, Biden announced that he was going to be a one-term president as he would be dropping out of the race.
Reaction to President Biden’s Announcement
Reacting to this, Keir Starmer, the British Prime Minister, said that he respects Biden’s decision and anticipates working together for the remainder of his tenure. Starmer visited Washington in July 2024, meeting with President Biden.
Taking to X, Starmer tweeted that he knew Biden would always do what he thinks is best for the American people, as he had done his entire career. Justin Trudeau, the Canadian Prime Minister, has taken to his account on X to send a message of gratitude to Biden. Trudeau wrote that Biden is a great man who considers his country first in any decision he takes. On Thursday, July 11, 2024, Trudeau was present in Washington, DC for a NATO Summit.
During his press conference, the prime minister of Australia, Anthony Albanese, said that Biden deserves special recognition. Albanese stated that Biden continues to prioritize the U.S. interest over his, as he has done his whole life. New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon wrote that “President Biden has dedicated his life to public service, and that is something that deserves much respect.”
Volodymyr Zelensk, Ukrainian President has issued his appreciation to Biden for his support to Ukraine in the war against Russia. The Biden administration has provided unwavering support to Ukraine, providing financial aid, military aid, and diplomatic support despite the backlash from Republicans.

Zelensky wrote on X “Many strong decisions have been made in recent years and they will be remembered as bold steps taken by President Biden in response to challenging times.” Additionally, Zelensky wrote that they will always be thankful for his leadership.
Russia and Isreal Reacts
On Monday, July 22, 2024, a media representative for the Kremlin, Dmitry Peskov, gave an insight into the Russian views of the situation. Peskov stated that Biden’s withdrawal had not taken Moscow by surprise as they expected something of such. He said that the Russian government has been taught not to be surprised by anything happening in the United States, especially in the last few years.
Additionally, Peskov said that the topic should be discussed by American voters, who are directly affected by it. Peskov also stated that the only Russian concern is the future of Russian-American relations, which he claimed were at their worst.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu assured continued ally status to the US, regardless of the election winner. Netanyahu expressed gratitude to Biden for his support for Israel during his years as a senator, vice president, and president. Netanyahu gave the interview on Monday, July 22, 2024, at the tarmac of Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion Airport. The Israeli Prime Minister stated that his flight to the U.S. was his opportunity to offer his appreciation in person.
President Biden Endorses Kamala Harris
Subsequently, after Biden announced his withdrawal and rejected the nomination of the Democrats, he officially announced his support for Harris. Harris serves as the Vice President to Biden and was his official running mate in the November 2024 election.
According to Biden, Harris is the most qualified contender to take on Republican nominee Trump. Biden wrote “My fellow Democrats, I have decided not to accept the nomination and to focus all my energies on my duties as President for the remainder of my term. My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President. And it’s been the best decision I’ve made.
