On August 8, 1975, Hank Williams Jr., who was 26 at the time, suffered a near-death experience. After recording his breakout album, “Hank Williams Jr. & Friends,” Hanks had gone hiking to Ajax Peak in Montana with a friend. However, the hike took a turn when he fell and plummeted more than 500 feet.
About a quarter of a mile from the accident scene, a helicopter had to make a forced landing. Six men carried Hank to the helicopter, which delivered him to Missoula Community Hospital during the six-hour-long rescue.
Given the severity of his injury, it took a team of five physicians and more than seven hours to treat injuries to his head and face. Subsequently, in his 1980 track, “All in Alabama,” Hank sings about climbing up old Ajax Mountain, referencing the fall.
In the song’s lyrics, Hank says, “I made it up to the top, picked out a clear spot. I thought a whole lot about the rest of my life. I had no idea then, soon it would nearly end. Up on this mountainside, I would nearly die.”

In 1975, Hank suffered a fall on his hiking trip when the snow beneath him collapsed. This collapse resulted in a 500-foot fall, causing multiple severe skull and facial fractures. It took Hank two years and 17 operations to rebuild his face and fix his skull while retraining his voice and speech.
In August 2023, appearing on “The Bobby Bones Show,” Hanks recalled his near-death experience, stating that he is grateful to be alive. Taking to his Instagram page, Hanks wrote, “48 years ago today, 530 feet and 17 operations later, this picture says it all. I am a very blessed and thankful man.”
