“Squid Game 2” started airing on December 26, 2024. And it has captured hype once more thanks to various factors, but most especially due to the desire of viewers to see how it ends.

After all, the first season ended with a cliffhanger. It saw Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) about to get on a plane to go see his daughter in the U.S. after emerging as the winner of the games. However, he called the number on one of the Squid Game cards and got pulled right back into it. As such, viewers can expect more games and a lot of action outside the arena in the new season.

What Will Be the Story of “Squid Game Season 2?”

After the title card and seeing Gi-hun pick out the tracker embedded behind his ear, the timeline skips two years. By then, police officer Hwang Jun-ho (Wi Ha-joon) had become a traffic cop. He had willingly resigned from his position as a detective after he was discovered half-dead by a fisherman in the water near one of the islands.

“Squid Game 2” will see Gi-hun dedicate his life to hunting down the people behind the Games. He uses the considerable prize money to buy a rundown motel. Then he teams up with the loan shark, whom he pays back, to find the Recruiter (Gong Yoo) of the Games so he can get into another round.

The second season has seven episodes, with the first two splitting off from the confines of the Games as they focus solely on Gi-hun’s hunt. It helps understand how far Gi-hun has come since the end of Season 1.

The initial episodes also successfully introduce the new characters who exist outside the Games. These include other participants and at least one person who wears the mask of a guard. “Squid Game 2” also attempts to dive into the psyche of the guards on masks.

They are expected to be psychopaths who enjoy killing those who lose or step out of line, but season 2 shows that not all of them are like that.

Critics Say Viewers Can Expect a Lot of Repetition

The show’s first season had some characters some critics have called cliche. And even though most were killed off in the first season, they seemed to be reincarnated in “Squid Game 2.” Just in different bodies.

For example, those labeled “good” were often people with sob stories of how they lost money due to an injustice or scam. Meanwhile, those labeled “evil” were simply the greedy, money-hungry people.

Even the characters’ backgrounds are similar to the late characters from season 1. There’s a North Korean character willing to do anything to get their family out of the North and an evil leader of the “bad” group with cronies who terrorize the other players.

There’s even a loud and obnoxious female character, often up to no good, and a cold female character with a soft heart beneath her tough shell. Indeed, for every character killed off in Season 1, there’s a Season 2 replacement for them, and critics have frowned upon this.

Expect Predictable Games in “Squid Game 2”

One of the worst things about “Squid Game 2” is that once the story cuts to the arena, it becomes predictable. This means anyone with working brain cells can see the plot twists coming even when there is a new game.

And just in case you don’t, the show prepares you for the upcoming twist by having the actors talk about it. One thing that made Squid Game season 1 suck was that it showed first and told second. Like in anime, they would make characters explain what was happening to ensure the audience does not miss it even though it is always obvious.

For instance, at one point during the Games, the players are formed into teams with their legs tied together to play a relay race-style game. After showing that their bound legs will make turning around as a group more difficult and that it’s easier to simply walk backward, the scene cuts to one of the characters stating the same thing, as though the creators were worried viewers would not get it.

Critics say this happened repeatedly throughout “Squid Game 2” and takes away from its allure.

Who Is Returning for Squid Game Season 2?

The new season of Squid Game will see fans enjoy the acting of some familiar faces, including Lee Jung-jae, Lee Byung-hun, Wi Ha-jun, and Gong Yoo.

Is Squid Game Season 2 Out?

Yes, “Squid Game 2” started airing on Netflix on December 26, 2024. It only contains seven episodes and is expected to have a third season.
