In a House floor speech on Tuesday, Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) challenged former President Trump’s assertion that any executive could unilaterally close the southern border. Trump made these remarks in a social media post on Tuesday.

This followed House Republicans’ decision to block a bipartisan Senate border security bill, arguing that President Biden should instead use executive orders to unilaterally halt all migrants from entering the U.S.

Referring to Trump’s post, Roy stated, “No, we’re not simply going to pass the buck and claim that any president can walk in and secure the border. All a president has to do is declare the border closed, and it’s closed.”

He continued, “Well, with all due respect, that didn’t occur in 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020. Millions of people entered the United States during those four years.” However, Roy did commend the Trump administration for securing the border despite not implementing the complete shutdown that Trump advocated for on Tuesday.

“What did happen was that the administration, led by the president and individuals who believe in America, along with strong leadership at the Department of Homeland Security, actively worked to secure the border and reduce those numbers,” Roy stated. “They also worked to compel Mexico to keep individuals in place through the migrant protection protocols.”

In an unexpected turn of events, a House vote to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas failed on Tuesday. This occurred after Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-Wis.) broke ranks with two other Republicans to vote against it. At the same time, Rep. Al Green (D-Texas) surprisingly attended the vote despite undergoing recent surgery.

Republicans argued that Mayorkas’s poor job performance warranted impeachment, a stance challenged by both Democrats and dissenting GOP members. Following the vote, Roy emphasized the need for Republicans to redirect their attention to border security policy in his floor speech.

“We cannot lose sight of the unity we have as Republicans that there is a way to secure the border,” he said. “We know what it is. We’re gonna stand up for it, and we’re gonna fight for it.”

“We are gonna keep fighting for it now, fight for it in this Congress,” he continued. “We’re gonna fight for it through the elections. We are gonna fight for it next year when, Lord willing, there’s a Republican president.”

One user stated, “From 2016 to 2018, the Republicans had control of the White House, Senate, and Congress. They did not pass one immigration bill. More immigrants were deported when Obama was president than when Trump was in office.

Only 50 miles of border wall were built, and Mexico did not pay one cent. TRUMP did get a large tax cut for the wealthy one percent. Still waiting for the big, beautiful health care plan.”

Another user contends, “Contrary to what a lot of people believe, that these people are coming here for freebies, they are coming here for work. Because for decades there have been people willing to break the law and hire them.

The laws currently on the books says that anyone who hires an illegal is subject to a $3,000 fine and 6 months in per violation jail and is rarely enforced. Try enforcing that and make E-verify mandatory. They won’t because they know it will crash the economy and they will lose their phony campaign issue.”
