The authorities in Arkansas have charged the owner of an in-home daycare after two children are said to have consumed marijuana gummies while under her supervision, based on several accounts.

Officials said that parents of two separate kids disclosed that their children had marijuana in their bloodstream after visiting the daycare facility. Tamantha McPherson, 58, is accused of two separate counts of compromising the well-being of a minor.

She is also facing counts of introducing controlled substances into the body of another, as reported by local outlet Ozark Radio News and NBC affiliate KYTV. According to court documents, the parents of a two-year-old child discovered that their daughter was acting strangely.

After they collected her from a daycare in Yellville in April, the parents noticed something was off. According to reports, the parents, who stated that marijuana wasn’t available in their home, also noted that the daycare owner did not have permission to administer medication to their daughter outside parental approval.

Days later, a second set of parents told officials that their 15-month-old son was acting strangely shortly after they picked him up from daycare. His blood test from a pediatrician later came back positive for marijuana, and his parents also stated that there was no marijuana in their home.

During an interview with officials, Tamantha McPherson stated that she stores her THC gummies in her kitchen area — the same location she runs her daycare with approximately eight children. She also said that she transports the gummies from Missouri to Arkansas.

Are Gummies Bad for Your Stomach?

As convenient as they are, gummies have some drawbacks. They get their flavor from sugar, erythritol, mannitol, isomalt, and other sweeteners. Some manufacturers advertise their gummies as sugar-free by replacing the sweetener with citric acid.

However, in most situations, the citric acid in gummies is as hazardous since it wears away the enamel that protects your teeth. Refined sweets can harm your health. When consumed in large quantities, they can cause obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, tooth decay, and other long-term (chronic) diseases.

According to studies, refined sugar may increase your risk of developing liver disease and certain types of cancer. High sugar intake has also been linked to depression.

Sugar alcohols, which are natural sugar replacements derived from fruits and berries, are frequently present in vitamin gummies and may induce digestive problems such as nausea, bloating, and diarrhea.

Are Marijuana Gummies Better Than Smoking for Highs?

According to James MacKillop, director of McMaster University’s Michael G. DeGroote Centre for Medicinal Cannabis Research, edibles can often produce a more powerful, overwhelming high than smoking due to how the body breaks down T.H.C., the primary ingredient in cannabis.

Even for seasoned consumers, edibles can have a strong effect. That high can be pleasurable for some people, but it can also cause fear and anxiety in others.

According to Dr. MacKillop, edibles may have a lower addictive potential because, in general, the faster a person feels the effects of a drug, the more likely the user would become dependent. According to sources, around one-fifth of those who use cannabis get cannabis use disorder.

What Are the Cons of Taking Marijuana Gummies?

People can employ various delicacies, such as brownies and baked goods, chocolates, teas and other liquids, and, of course, gummies. Weed gummies are among the most popular edibles due to their widespread availability and ease of purchase.

Because of the numerous factors that can impact this timing, estimating the exact duration of side effects after ingesting an edible can be challenging. In general, it takes around 30 minutes for the effects of a cannabis gummy to begin.

In addition, it takes four hours for them to peak. Some folks may require up to 24 hours for the effects of a cannabis gummy to wear off. Of all, just because a person’s adverse effects subside does not indicate the weed has completely left their system.

Marijuana can often take one to two weeks to completely leave the system. This is important to consider if someone who has used edibles has an upcoming drug test or other medical visit.

Similar to the Tamantha McPherson daycare incident, six children at a Boys & Girls Club in Lauderhill, Florida were reportedly hospitalized in October 2023 after consuming candy that was later discovered to be loaded with cannabis.

In the months following, four third graders in California have been hospitalized after ingesting edibles, and a mother in Memphis claims her 2-year-old child ate THC gummies at a daycare.
