Donald Trump’s estranged niece has gone online to voice her opinion about Elon Musk. Mary Trump has criticized the X CEO after he decided to remove the like feature from the app.
In 2022, Musk purchased Twitter for a record amount of $44 billion to make the platform more user-friendly. After purchasing the app, Musk made several changes, including changing the application name to X.
On Tuesday, June 11, 2024, Musk posted to his X page discussing people’s right to like a post without being criticized for it. The following day, the popular mobile application started hiding the number of likes a tweet has.
However, the new feature was not received in good faith by X users, who took to the platform to criticize the decision. One of the most prominent critics is Mary Trump, the niece of the Republican presidential candidate. Trump said that the new X feature confirmed Musk was not as smart as he seemed.

Over 250,000 people had seen Trump’s post as of Thursday, June 13, 2024. In the aftermath of her post, several individuals have gone under her post to share their displeasure with the new feature. Several people have commented about what they thought the reason behind the feature was.
A user had theorized that Musk wanted to like an inappropriate tweet without having to suffer the backlash. The user claimed that only Musk could view what people have liked and use it against them in the future.
Another person compared Musk to Donald Trump, suggesting that he took away the like feature because of his ego. The user claimed that Musk had brought the platform because he wanted to have control of it. He also believes that Musk did not want people to criticize him for the tweets, hence his decision.

A user wrote, “What if everybody were to post “like [heart emoji]” in every single post they like? I’m sure that wouldn’t mess up everyone’s feed!” Additionally, another user had said they wished they could sue for damaging the online platform.
Despite the backlash, there have been some tweets in support of the decision. Popular English personality Oli London, known for her controversial statements, has tweeted in support of the new feature. London claimed that not only was the feature great, but it would allow people to like any tweet they agreed with.
Similarly, Ed Krassenstein, an influencer, wrote, “Good move. It’s a step toward providing people with more privacy. If people want to share what they like, they can repost the content.” Another user said it was terrible that people were attacked because they liked something.

This announcement follows X’s policy change to allow pornographic material that is “consensually generated and disseminated” on the platform. The decision has drawn criticism on social media, with some arguing that it would negatively impact the user experience.
The platform stated that it would block users from accessing such information by displaying a warning before they do. Posters would have to adjust their settings on the platform to accept these kinds of alerts. According to the guidelines, those who are younger than a certain age cannot access the content.
