If you’re an American taxpayer, you’re footing the bill for many illegal aliens entering the country. A study found that over half of households led by non-citizens are getting welfare benefits, based on data from the 2022 Census Bureau’s Survey of Income and Program Participation.

The study by Steven A. Camarota and Karen Zeigler found that immigrants and U.S.-born individuals heavily rely on anti-poverty programs. Immigrant households, in particular, are significantly more likely to receive benefits.

In 2022, 54 percent of immigrant households, including naturalized U.S. citizens, used at least one welfare program, as per the study’s findings. Excluding households led by naturalized citizens, even more migrant households utilize welfare benefits.

According to the study, a substantial 59 percent of households led by either a green card holder or an illegal alien receive welfare.

Migrants, including green card holders and illegal aliens, qualify for certain federal welfare benefits and may access others through U.S.-born children, often called “anchor babies.” The propensity for welfare use among migrants was noted across various socioeconomic levels.

Progressives and big business interests have consistently tried to make an economic case for migration. They argue that migrants are more productive than Americans and provide a source of inexpensive labor for the ultra-wealthy.

Under President Joe Biden’s administration, the United States has set annual records for illegal immigration. This has led to increased legal immigration levels at the U.S.-Mexico border, as reported by the Financial Times.

Large groups of asylum seekers have been “paroled” out of immigration detention with little more than a distant court date with an immigration judge.

A 2013 study by Harvard academic George Borjas supported the notion that mass immigration has detrimental effects on American citizens’ wages and economic standing.

On a different note, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement deported over 142,000 immigrants in fiscal year 2023, nearly doubling the previous year’s number. The Biden administration increased enforcement to curb illegal border crossings.

The rise in deportations primarily mirrors the surge in migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border, as the Biden administration emphasizes border enforcement over interior actions.

President Biden aimed to establish a compassionate immigration system, seeking a temporary deportation pause. However, challenges arose due to GOP resistance and public concerns about record border apprehensions exceeding 2 million in 2022 and fiscal 2023.

The Biden administration cites poverty and political insecurity as drivers of the highest global migration levels since World War II. In the Western Hemisphere, migrants escape authoritarian governments, violence, and poverty, seeking a new life in the United States.

Advocates for immigrants argue that past policies, forcing migrants into dangerous Mexican cities, were inhumane. They urge Congress to update immigration laws to address the issue.

Business leaders and nonprofits emphasize the desperate need for workers in the United States, with an estimated 10 million unfilled jobs.

Silky Shah, executive director of Detention Watch Network, a national coalition opposing migrant detention, expresses concern about the increase in removals. She credits local advocacy for tamping down deportations from the interior of the United States.
