It was an interesting sight to behold when vandals went on a rampage by desecrating some portions of the Washington Lincoln Memorial. National Park Service officials first noticed the vandalism last week Wednesday.
The vandalization occurred on Tuesday night and probably would not have been public if the Memorial had not been shut down.
Since last week, teams of cleanup companies have been working round the clock to remove the graffiti paints. So, the Memorial has remained closed to public access since last week.
This will allow the cleanup crew to subject the paints used on the monuments to multiple treatments. From the look of things, it may remain closed to the public for yet another week.
The message of the vandals was symbolic and well-spelt out. It is symbolic because the graffiti was written in red. Likewise, the culprits had too much red paint on their hands as they spilled a notable volume on the steps leading up to the Memorial.

The inscriptions largely consist of two words: “Free Gaza.” The vandals are basically calling for a ceasefire and truce in Gaza. A few months ago, the Hamas group hoodwinked the Israeli forces by launching a surprise attack.
During the attack, hundreds of young Israelis attending a music festival lost their lives. Likewise, the Hamas apprehended many, taking them as hostages for future exchanges of Palestinian prisoners in Israel.
Since then, Israel has launched an all-out attack, killing not just Hamas militia but Palestinian civilians. This counterattack from Israel has sparked a wave of protests around the world. Some protesters are quite liberal, being as peaceful as possible. While some are radical, going to law-defying extremes.

For example, some student organizations in the United States have publicly spread a form of neo-antisemitism. So, since the Israeli-Hamas war started, it has simultaneously sparked waves of ideological conflicts around the world.
What played out last week on the Lincoln Memorial’s steps is no exception. Americans are showing their displeasure with the humanitarian disaster daily unfolding in Gaza. Interestingly, these unknown protesters decided to get the attention of Biden’s administration in a quite uncanny way.
The vandalism affected the Reflecting Pool, the Lincoln Memorial Circle, and the Hill. Many news outlets are giving reports and updates on the incident. They all show footage of a pronounced spillage of red paint on the Memorial’s steps.

In a statement by the National Park Service, this would not be the first defacement attack on the Lincoln Memorial. Just last month, some protesters wrote “Free Palestine” on monuments at Lafayette Square. The Lafayette Square of Washington is a stone’s throw from the White House.
It won’t be a surprise if the cleanup crew who did restoration work on the statues at Lafayette Square are involved in the cleanup of the Lincoln Memorial.
The US Park Police are currently investigating the recent incident. Personnel of the Park Police are on round-the-clock surveillance of the Lincoln Monument. These men enforce the closure of the public space and, likewise, are looking for a recurrence.
