The Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is optimistic about a bipartisan bill he believes the Senate should pass. This bill seeks to impose structured immigration and asylum laws, but Republicans are strongly against it. In an interview on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” he spoke on this bill and the happenings behind the scenes

“I’m confident [about the bill]— hopeful is the right word,” he said. “This is hard. And our Republican senators — we need a bunch of them — are under a lot of pressure from the right-wing Trump part of the party.”

After several months of negotiations, the Senators finally released the text of the bipartisan bill. It is worth $118 billion, and it comes amidst the funding to warring countries like Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan. However, the Republicans have withdrawn support from sending aides to these countries.

They will only continue to support them if the Senate passes a bill that provides stricter immigration laws. Hence, the new bill. In a surprising twist, the Republicans are not happy with this new bipartisan bill. In fact, many of them do not plan on voting yes for it.

Schumer addressed this issue and mentioned that he believes most of them are simply following instructions from Donald Trump. “ Will the senators drown out the political noise from Trump and his minions and do the right thing for America?” he asked. “It’s a crucial question. History will is looking down on every one of us right now.”

As the Senate seems divided, the interviewer asked Schumer what he predicts will happen if the bill gets there. “First is a big group of hawks in the middle, and they care about funding Ukraine — they always have — and the strategy of Johnson is right now do nothing,” he said.

“There’s a large number of pro-Israel people — they care about that. Then there’s a large number of progressive legislators, I’m included, who want to see that Gaza, the people in Gaza, don’t starve, and we get that aid to them.”

He added, “Plus, there are some who care about Taiwan, and there’s money there to bolster us against China’s aggression there,” he added. “You know, we’re in an aggressive world, and we got a lot of dictators linking up — Russia, China, Iran. If we don’t defend ourselves, we don’t want this to be like 1938.”

Shortly after the release of the text of the bill, Republican Speaker Mike Johnson sent out a message on X (formerly Twitter). He wrote that “It will be dead on arrival” if the bill reaches the House. However, Schumer believes it is a “compromise” and “the only way to get things done.”

He continued, “Well, he’s saying that now because he hopes his nightmare is we pass it in the Senate. So he’s doing everything he can to thwart us passing it in the Senate. But once we pass it in the Senate, God willing, I think there’ll be huge pressure from within his caucus and without to get this done.”

“If he put this bill on the floor of this House right now, it would pass. We’d get a lot of Democratic votes, and we get some good number of Republican votes.” The only way to truly know how this will go down is by watching to see what happens if it reaches the Senate.
