Rupert Grint, the former “Harry Potter” film actor, is facing a £1.8 million ($2.3 million) debt after losing a legal battle with the tax authorities. Grint, who played Ron Weasley in the magical film trilogy, was compelled to pay the money in 2019 after H.M. Revenue and Customs, the United Kingdom’s tax office, scrutinized his tax return from seven years prior.
The agency claimed Grint incorrectly classified 4.5 million pounds in film residuals—money from DVD sales, TV syndication, streaming rights, and other sources—as a capital asset rather than income, which is taxed at a considerably higher rate.
Grint’s lawyers filed an appeal, but after years of dispute, a tribunal judge ruled against him this week. Judge Harriet Morgan ruled that the money “derived substantially the whole of its value from the activities of Mr. Grint” and, therefore, “taxable as income.” In 2019, the actor lost a separate court battle for a £1 million tax refund.
