New Huntington Council Transforms City to Rights Battleground

Huntington is one of the beach cities on the southern coast of California. It is a point of attraction for beachgoers and identifies as a relatively calm and peaceful city.

However, a new string of council members have recently been elected to the city chambers. So, thanks to these new additions, the Huntington Beach City Council now has a conservative majority.

Unfortunately, Huntington residents are not too welcoming of the recent shakeup that is materializing with the emergence of the new council members.

Many of the recent legislative changes by the City Council are more polarizing than progressive. It’s so bad that some residents and local business owners are nursing fears that Hunington may lose its tourist traffic. Instead, the city may become a hotbed of protests, hate movements, and polarization.

It is common knowledge that Huntington is a city slowly catching on to liberalism. So, it took the council members of 2021 to allow the rainbow flag to fly to commemorate Pride Month. Of course, this is common practice in other cities in California, but it took a brief stint of liberals in the council to make it possible. Unfortunately, even that did not last long.

Surf City is a largely conservative city, with GOPs filling the majority of the voting population. The city’s population is indeed getting more diverse by the day. However, Republicans often determine the political temperature of the city.

In 2022, the council elections brought in conservatives like Tony Strickland, Grace Van Der Mark, Casey McKeon, and Pat Burns.

According to some residents, these four Republicans came into office with promises of resolving issues affecting the average local. However, once in office, these four have gone out on a rampage of conservatism, enacting legislation that has nothing to do with their campaign promises.

For example, the new council majority suggests removing the pride flag from public buildings. Also, they have set up a 21-man committee to review books in the children’s section of the city library for explicit or queer content.

Likewise, the new council declared Huntington Beach City a “no mask and no vaccine mandate city.” These legislations are largely in defiance of statewide regulations.

On average, the political responsibilities of local officials does not come with media show. However, some political analysts believe that what is presently happening in Huntington reflects trends in conservative counties around the country.

These observers think that many of these controversial policies are intentional. The council members will likely draw attention and make headlines, all for their political benefit.

However, there’s a silver lining for Huntington residents. More of them are becoming aware and are now actively involved in local politics. So much so that hundreds of residents are lately showing up at council chambers to either voice their displeasure or root on their candidate.
