Netflix Sets “Squid Game” Season 2 Premiere Date With a Track-and-Field-Inspired Teaser

On Wednesday, July 31, Netflix unveiled a teaser for the much-awaited upcoming season of the South Korean drama Squid Game, complete with a track-and-field teaser. Along with this revelation, the streaming platform also disclosed that the third and final season of the show will premiere in 2025. 

“The actual match starts. Season 2 of Squid Game will debut on December 26,” Netflix posted on its official accounts on X (previously Twitter) and Instagram. “The Final Season is coming in 2025.”

Following the success of the first season, fans of the series have looked forward to the second season of Squid Game. With Netflix’s announcement, fans’ curiosity has peaked, with many inquiring about what to expect in the new season. Here’s all we know.

Squid Game Season 2 Trailer

According to the nearly one-minute-long trailer uploaded by Netflix, we’re in for a ride! The camera switches to the Front Man, who says, “It’s been three years,” while many are screaming and falling. “Want to engage in some gaming?”

Three years after winning the Squid Game, Player 456 (Lee Jung) is still committed to tracking down the individuals responsible and ending their cruel pastime. Gi-hun, who uses this fortune to finance his hunt, begins in the most obvious place, looking for the man performing ddakji in the tube dressed sharply.

“But when his efforts finally yield results, the path towards taking down the organization proves to be deadlier than he imagined. To end the game, he needs to re-enter it,” the official summary states.

Will Seong Gi-hun Rejoin Squid Game Season 2?

Yes, he will. In an open letter to fans, series creator, director, and executive producer Hwang Dong-hyuk also revealed his teaser. “Seong Gi-hun, who pledged retaliation after Season 1, reappears and rejoins the game. Will he be able to get his revenge?”

“This time around, Front Man doesn’t seem to be an easy opponent either,” he added. “The fierce clash between their two worlds will continue into the series finale with Season 3, which will be brought to you next year.” 

Hwang said that he is “thrilled to see the seed that was planted in creating a new Squid Game grow and bear fruit through the end of this story.” However, he assured the supporters, saying, “We’ll do our best to make sure we bring you yet another thrilling ride.”

Squid Game Season 2 Cast

Squid Game Season 2 will include a comeback for Lee Jung Jae. Wi Ha-jun, Gong Yoo, and Lee Byung-hun, who are returning to the cast, will accompany him. Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Gyu-young, Lee Jin-uk, Lee Sung-hoon, Yang Dong-geun, Kang Ae-sim, Lee David, Choi Seung-hyun, Roh Jae-won, Jo Yu-ri, and Won Ji-an are among the new cast members. 

Gi-hun’s adventure is continued in the official description for Season 2. While there has been no mention of what the additional casts will portray, Netflix has revealed that Player 456 wants to stop the Squid Game three years after winning it. Furthermore, we now know that he also has to rejoin the game to discover who is behind it.

What Is the Most-Watched TV Series on Netflix?

The first season of “Squid Game” is the most-watched TV show on Netflix. With six wins, the show had 14 Emmy nominations. Hwang won the Best Director award, Lee Jung-Jae won the Best Actor in a Drama Series award, and Lee You-mi received the Best Guest Actress award.

Upon its release in 2021, Squid Game became an instant global success. It was the first Korean show to rank #1 in the United States and quickly became Netflix’s biggest series launch ever.

After making its global premiere on Netflix in September 2021, Squid Game surpassed both “Bridgerton” and “Stranger Things” to become the streamer’s most-watched original series ever.

Additionally, viewers worldwide created countless memes and TikTok parodies after the show sparked their imaginations. A writer for EW reports that Netflix took advantage of the excitement and produced a (quite good) spin-off reality series that “manages to serve up palpable suspense and authentic human drama without murdering a single contestant.”

The second season of Squid Game is starring several well-known actors, including both fresh faces and veterans. Also, the production started at the end of 2023. Every episode is once again directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk, who won an Emmy for his work in season 1.
