“Nobody Wants This,” Netflix’s latest romantic comedy series, has received criticism since its September 26 premiere. The reason for this criticism is that some viewers see “stereotypical” Jewish characters. For context, the show follows the developing affection between a rabbi and a sex podcaster.
In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, series creator Erin Foster responded to the controversy. She stated that the show aims to shine a positive light on Jewish culture. Foster turned to Judaism after falling in love with her spouse.
Several days after “Nobody Wants This” premiered on Netflix, author and Glamour senior West Coast editor Jessica Radloff published an essay titled “Netflix’s ‘Nobody Wants This’ and the Persistent Jewish Stereotype.”
She expressed that the show’s Jewish personalities come across as authoritative, marriage-hungry women who want to plan dinner parties and disengage anyone who does not share their dreams.
Radloff was not alone in her criticisms. Time magazine also criticized the series for its disparaging portrayal of Jewish women. They further claimed that the series seemed to despise Jewish women, depicting them as nags, harpies, and the final villains of the plot.
