On Tuesday, April 23, 2024, police reported at a conference that a man killed his wife and three of his children in an apparent murder-suicide mass shooting. According to the report, the murder-suicide mass shooting occurred at a home in Oklahoma.

The only survivor from the tragic shooting was the couple’s 10-year-old son. Oklahoma City police said the boy was asleep during the shootings. The 10-year-old called 911 and said, “Everyone inside the house appeared to be dead,” police said at the news conference.

Officials have since identified the man who killed his family and himself as 42-year-old Jonathon Candy. Police said they believe Candy “became involved in an altercation” with his wife, 39-year-old Lindsay Candy. As the altercation escalated, he shot her multiple times.

Afterward, Jonathon Candy then “systematically” went through their home. He then shot and killed three of their children: 18-year-old Dylan, 14-year-old Ethan, and 12-year-old Lucas, according to police. Authorities believe Candy hunted his children. “Those children were hunted down,” police said.

However, they do not know why he left the 10-year-old unhurt. There is still much unknown in the Candy case, as the man also shot himself after killing his wife and three of his kids. However, an investigation into the case is ongoing.

Similarly, a murder-suicide case shook Hawaii’s capital in March 2024. A man stabbed his wife and three children to death in their family home in Honolulu before killing himself. According to police reports, the tragic incident happened on Sunday, March 10.

Police said the children were ages 10, 12, and 17, and authorities pronounced them dead at the scene. Honolulu Police Lt. Deena Thoemmes said officers responded to reports of an argument at a house in the city’s Manoa district around 9 a.m. On getting to the house, authorities found five people dead.

“Based on the evidence found at the scene and the investigation thus far,” Thoemmes said. “It appears that the adult male killed the female and the juveniles with a knife that was recovered from the scene.” She added that the evidence suggests “these don’t appear to be random acts.”

Thoemmes said the killings were the deadliest crime in Honolulu since the shooting at a Xerox Corp. building in 1999. “I’d like to give our heartfelt condolences to the families,” Police Chief Arthur “Joe” Logan said at the news conference. “It’s unfortunate and very sad.”

Logan said that officers first reported to the house at 8:30 a.m. He noted they may have knocked on the door and spoken to someone. However, they left without taking any further action, only to return soon after, following another 911 call.

“They didn’t have enough information to make entry into the dwelling until we came back at 9 a.m.,” Logan said. “And spoke to another witness who provided more information,” Logan said. He added that such a brutal crime “doesn’t happen in Hawaii very often.”

He said the scenes inside the house will stay with the officers “for the rest of their lives.” Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi said he was “heartbroken by the tragic incident.”
