Former President Donald Trump met with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán on Friday. The meeting stirred speculation and raised concerns, particularly regarding its potential implications for the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Following his meeting with Donald Trump in Florida, Viktor Orbán disclosed on March 10 what he claimed to be Trump’s plan to resolve the war in Ukraine within 24 hours.
As Russian experts and pundits had long suspected, the plan essentially revolved around ending US aid to Ukraine. This is with the hope that the conflict between the aggressor and the victim would gradually fade out.
Orbán said: “Trump will not give a penny in the Ukraine-Russia war. That is why the war will end.” He added, “If the Americans don’t give money and weapons, along with the Europeans, then the war is over. And if the Americans don’t give money, the Europeans alone are unable to finance this war. And then the war is over.”

But Orbán’s suggestion that stopping Western aid to Ukraine would make it submit to Russian aggression is worrying. It shows a lack of concern for Ukraine’s sovereignty and safety and a readiness to prioritize Russian interests over a democratic ally.
The Hungarian leader is still upset about being sidelined at the February 1 European Union (EU) summit, where $54 billion in aid for Ukraine was agreed upon. However, he implied that Trump’s actions could lead to a ceasefire. He suggested that cutting off Western aid would eventually compel Ukraine to surrender.
Although he didn’t mention the further dismemberment of Ukraine, the Kremlin has indicated it has greater ambitions beyond the territories it has already seized. Orbán and Trump’s obvious alliance, with Orbán revealing Trump’s plan to end aid to Ukraine, has drawn criticism.
The severe impacts of Russia’s occupation and its state-funded media’s genocidal mouthpiece towards Ukrainians were ignored. It is rare for a visiting foreign leader to meet with a former president without involving the current US administration.

Even Trump’s supporters in Russia found the situation bold. State Duma member Leonid Kalashnikov was impressed by Trump’s fearless demeanor during the March 11 evening broadcast of the state TV show 60 Minutes.
Russian lawmakers called Trump “unhinged” but appreciate his favorable stance towards Russia during his presidency. They commented that the former US president was “acting like a Russian,” pointing to Orbán’s recent visit as evidence.
Kalashnikov stated: “I am a fan of Trump, based on the interests of my country.” He expressed gratitude for the four-year reprieve he said Trump’s presidency provided for Russia, allowing the country to prepare for its expanded invasion of Ukraine.
This is not unusual — lawmakers and foreign policy experts frequently gush about their affinity for Trump as “the destroyer of America.”

The idea that Hungary could act as an intermediary for Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, possibly resulting in Ukraine’s demise and territorial concessions to Hungary, is alarming. It shows the calculations being employed by certain parties who chose power and influence over democratic principles and human rights.
Orbán’s statements and the obvious connection between Trump and Putin raise serious concerns about Ukraine’s future and the global political landscape. It stresses the need for ongoing international backing for Ukraine and a united stance against Russian aggression.
