Kansas City Chiefs Kicker Harrison Butker has found an editor for himself. Butker gave a commencement speech to the new graduates at Benedictine Catholic College. Sadly, his speech, which was aimed at motivating the graduates, got him into some trouble.
Aside from the negative comments he has received, he still has people who support his speech. One person who does not support his statement is the American singer Katy Perry. Apparently, Perry isn’t the only one who has outrightly shown dissatisfaction with his comment. The lead singer of the Pearl Jam band, Eddie Vedder, has also humiliated Butker for his statement. What did Butker say?
Harrison Butker’s Commencement Speech at Benedictine College
On May 11, Butker was invited to speak with the graduates of Benedictine Catholic College. In his speech, he stated that most women would find fulfillment in being housewives rather than pursuing a career. The Chiefs’ kicker said, “I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world.” Aside from promoting traditional roles, Butker went on to criticize LGBTQ rights, birth control, abortion access, and surrogacy. The American footballer simply calls these acts “pervasiveness of disorder.” For the gentlemen, Butker stated that men set the tone of culture.
“Don’t settle for easy things. Rather, do hard things.” He also said, “I’m certain the reporters at the AP could not have imagined that their attempt to rebuke and embarrass places and people like those here at Benedictine wouldn’t be met with anger, but instead with excitement and pride.” Butker didn’t end there; he further condemned the fact that an entire month was given to celebrate the LGBTQ community, referring to June being Pride month. He called the celebration a deadly sin.

Katy Perry Edits Harrison Butker’s Commencement Speech
Remember when I said Butker found himself an editor? Well, that editor is Katy Perry. To celebrate Pride month, the singer decided to rewrite Butker’s controversial speech at Benedictine College, Kansas. The American Idol judge shared an edited version of Butker’s commencement speech on her Instagram page.
In the video caption, she stated that she fixed the video for her girls, graduates, and gays. She simply told them they could do anything, unlike Butker’s advice to take up traditional roles. At the end of her caption, she congratulated the graduates and wished the LGBTQ community a happy pride month. Perry achieved her purpose in editing the speech by empowering the graduates rather than trying to put them in a gender box.

Harrison Butker Gets Bashed for His Commencement Speech
Aside from Eddie Vedder and Katy Perry’s thoughts on Butker’s commencement speech, many condemned Butker’s speech. Some claimed he’s promoting anti-LGBTQ and misogynistic views. To the critics, Butker’s statement was highly inappropriate. The Chief Diversity Officer of the NFL, Jonathan Beane, also issued a statement amid the backlash Butker received.
In the statement, Beane stated that Butker’s views about women and the LGBTQ community are totally different from the NFL’s. Beane also clarified that the NFL is solely committed to inclusion, and that’s exactly what makes their league strong.
Perry’s response to Butker’s statement actually received applause as she stood up for women and the LGBT community.

Harrison Butker Defends His Commencement Speech
Despite the backlash, Butker isn’t going back on his words. In a gala hosted by Regina Caeli Academy, Butker stood by the claims he made at Benedictine College. In his speech at the gala, he made his catholic faith known again. The NFL star also talked about the biblical prophet who got thrown into the lion’s den because of his commitment.
Despite the passed law, the prophet stayed committed to praying to his God. Butker said the courage that the saints showed towards the things of God made him tremble. Butker stated that he wouldn’t back down just to please society. He said he’s fully aware that his pronouncements will lead to a little suffering and that some people may never like him. However, Butker said he isn’t bothered because that might just be God’s will.
