Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson is the first black woman on the Supreme Panel. She is also the first former federal public defender to serve on the Supreme Court. Therefore, many people admire and look up to her for her groundbreaking achievements.

However, her reputation and work ethic are under much scrutiny. Some conservatives recently filed an ethics complaint against Jackson, claiming she “willfully” excluded her husband’s malpractice consulting income on required disclosures.

Through the Center for Renewing America, the conservatives sent a letter requesting that Attorney General Merrick Garland review their complaint. The letter reads, “There is reason to believe that Justice Jackson may have failed to report the private funding sources of her massive investiture celebration at the Library of Congress in her most recent financial disclosure.”

“We know this by Justice Jackson’s own admission in her amended disclosure form for 2020, filed when she was nominated to the Supreme Court, that ‘some of my previously filed reports inadvertently omitted’ her husband’s income from ‘consulting on medical malpractice cases,'” the letter continued.

Furthermore, “Given the need to ensure the equal application of the law and the tendency of these violations to create serious recusal issues and conflicts of interest, the Conference’s prompt attention is of paramount public importance.”

In addition, the letter claims that Jackson has a “disturbing trend of not reporting material sources of income and gifts.”

This is not surprising, as many Justices have been accused of doing the same thing earlier this year. For example, many reports claim that Justice Clarence Thomas received extensive undisclosed gifts from billionaire Harlan Crowe.

These are some significant allegations against Jackson that they cannot take lightly. Therefore, the group wants Garland himself to oversee the case. They also sent the letter through the proper channels to ensure they did things correctly.

If proven guilty, Jackson might face many disciplinary charges in the future. As the election season approaches, charges like this become increasingly frequent. Sometimes, this could result from opposing parties trying to keep their preferred candidates in power. It could also be a “retaliation” by other parties if another has done something detrimental to them.

For example, this complaint comes shortly after some Democrats sent a letter to the Supreme Court. In their letter, they asked Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas to recuse himself from a case about whether former President Trump is immune from prosecution over charges of attempting to overturn the 2020 election.

They wrote, “We strongly implore you to exercise your discretion and recuse yourself from this and any other decisions in the case of United States v. Trump.” They also claimed that Ginni Thomas, Thomas’s wife, was a backer of incorrect claims by former President Trump about the 2020 election.

Therefore, a panel interviewed Ginni and decided she was a part of these claims. Some sources think this might be a way for the Republicans to fight back. This could increase their strength in the Supreme Court by throwing Jackson under the bus.

The Supreme Court has not commented on this issue even though several news outlets have contacted them.
