He was raised with his siblings in a family brimming with love and camaraderie. Growing up, he got what he wanted thanks to his wealthy parents and his place as the youngest child, but they made sure not to spoil or overindulge him.

While raising them, Alison and Bono wanted John and their other kids to know how fortunate they are to have parents like them and that many children live in poverty.

Alison said: “We have taken them to the townships in South Africa. And although they have much more than Bono and I did growing up – Bono’s dad was in the postal service, my mum and dad had an electrical business – we don’t spoil them.”

John and his siblings were considered normal rather than “rock star kids.” They enjoyed a quiet, sheltered life in Dublin, far from the hustle and bustle of famous places like London, New York, or Los Angeles.

John Abraham Hewston Was Never Interested in Being a Celebrity Child

Unlike many kids born under famous parents, John Abraham Hewston was never attracted to fame or publicity. His father once revealed that when he dropped John off at school one day, the boy asked: “Would you mind dropping me off at the corner?”

Of course, he was not put down by the request. In his autobiography, the rockstar confessed that part of the adventure of being a father has been to watch John and his siblings grow and become their persons. He is incredibly proud of John, who discovered his talent as a sportsman and a rugby player.

Including John, they welcomed daughters Jordan and Eve and another son, whom they named Elijah. Bono is proud of his family, but at the beginning, before they started welcoming kids, he shared some of his worries with his wife. He was unsure how to make being a father work with his rockstar lifestyle. But one conversation with Ali was all he needed to assuage his fears.

Bono wrote in his memoir:

“As Ali and I walked back from Quincy [Jones]’s one night, an invisible switch got flicked. We were talking about kids and how the conventional life is not the only route to parenting, how people who live in their imagination can also live in the real world of parent-teacher meetings, school drops, and being there for birthdays. A month later, Ali was pregnant.”

They welcomed their first without problems and worked up to four great kids they are incredibly proud of today. Other celebrity couples like John’s parents who have helped their kids avoid the spotlight include Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis, Dax Shepard and Gwyneth Paltrow.
