Joe Biden Withdraws From the US Presidential Race, Endorses Kamala Harris as the Democratic Candidate

Less than four months before the election, President Joe Biden declared he was withdrawing from the presidential race and supporting Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic contender. 

This announcement completely upended the 2024 campaign and set the Democrats on an unprecedented course to replace him. On Sunday, July 21, 2024, the president made his momentous announcement and promptly endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris.

President Joe Biden’s Statement 

In a statement to the American people published on social media, Joe Biden stated. “Serving as your president has been the greatest honor of my life.” “And while I have intended to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down. Also, to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as president for the remainder of my term.”

After receiving intense criticism from fellow Democrats for his dismal June debate performance against former President Donald Trump, Joe Biden announced his resignation on Sunday, July 21, 2024.

According to experts, Democrats’ best chance of defeating Trump now is to unite behind a fresh contender and rekindle their support base. Kamala Harris, the vice president, is the early frontrunner to succeed Biden, particularly now that the president has endorsed her. Additionally, Biden urged supporters to give to Harris’s campaign.

Joe Biden said, “We’ve made historic investments in our country’s reconstruction, in seniors’ prescription drug costs, and in providing affordable health care to an unprecedented number of Americans.” 

“We have given a million veterans who were exposed to harmful toxins the desperately required care. The first gun was enacted by safety legislation in three decades. Made the first female African American Supreme Court nominee, and enacted the most important climate legislation in global history.”

“America has never been better positioned to lead than we are today,” Joe Biden said. Acknowledging that “I know none of this could have been done without you, the American people.” Together, we surmounted the greatest economic crisis since the Great Depression as well as a once-in-a-century epidemic. We have rebuilt and revitalized our international connections while defending and preserving our democracy.”

Furthermore, he stated, “Although it has always been my goal to run for reelection. I feel it would be best for my party and the nation if I stepped down and concentrated only on carrying out my presidential duties for the balance of my term.

Kamala Harris To Run Against the Opponents

Nevertheless, Biden’s choice to step down is not only strange; but unheard of in US politics. “This is new ground for us,” stated Kyle Kondik, managing editor of the University of Virginia Centre for Politics’ election-related periodical Sabato’s Crystal Ball.
