Bruno Mars was born Peter Gene Hernandez on October 8, 1985, in Honolulu, Hawaii. His father, Pete Hernandez, also known as “Dr. Doo-Wop,” was a Latin percussionist.
Mars got the name “Bruno” at the age of 4 when he started performing with his parent’s band “Love Notes.” The little kid was known for his Elvis Presley impersonation.
He also appeared in the 1992 movie “Honeymoon in Vegas” as Little Elvis. As a teenager, Mars also appeared at local venues impersonating Michael Jackson.
Mars taught himself to play piano, percussion, guitar, and bass as a teenager. After high school, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue his dreams of being a musician. Around this time, he also adopted the stage name, Bruno Mars.

In 2004 Mars signed with the record company “Motown,” where he met songwriter, Philip Lawrence. Mars, Lawrence, and sound engineer Ari Levine created the group “Smeezingtons,” where they wrote and produced songs for other artists.
Their stock quickly rose when they produced the hit song “Long Distance” for singer Brandy in 2008. The following year they made “Right Round” for Flo Rida and “Waving Flag” for rapper K’Naan.
Mars co-wrote and co-produced the 2010 hit song “Fuck You” for artist Cee Lo Green. He also sang on the singles released by “Smeezingtons,” including “Nothin’ On You” and “Billionaire.” Afterward, Mars signed up with the label “Elektra.”
In 2010 he released his EP “It’s Better If You Don’t Understand,” and five months later, the album “Doo-Wops & Hooligans.” The album was a huge commercial success featuring hit songs like “Just the Way You Are,” “Grenade,” and “The Lazy Song.”
The album won Mars his first Grammy Award for best male Pop Vocal Performance for “Just the Way You Are.” In December 2012, he released the album “Unorthodox Jukebox.” The album, which featured songs like “Treasure,” “When I Was Your Man,” and “Locked out of Heaven,” won the Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album.
Continued Success
In 2014 Mars contributed to the song “Uptown Funk,” a collaborative effort with British producer Mark Ronson. The song which appeared on Ronson’s album “Uptown Special” won the Grammy for record of the year.
The musician’s 2016 album “24k Magic” continued his successful run in the music industry. It won him multiple Grammy Awards for best album, record, and song for “That’s What I Like.”
In 2021 Mars linked up with singer Anderson. Paak to form the group “Silk Sonic.” They subsequently released the album “An Evening with Silk Sonic.” The single “Leave the Door Open” won Grammy Awards for best song and record. The group also won the best R&B at the 2021 VMAs.
