Actress Sarah Jessica Parker and her husband Matthew Broderick have been together for over two decades. All the while, the pair have managed to keep their relationship private.
Married since 1997, Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick’s relationship seems made in Hollywood heaven. First encountering each other on Broadway and reuniting months later to ignite their love the duo were undoubtedly destined from the start to be part of each other’s lives.
Over the years, the couple has sustained their love, expanded their family, and grown together in understanding and patience. Several hurdles and milestones later, the Hollywood power couple is still holding strong, creating a fine line between family and career.
Meet The Private Pair
Best known for her role as New York Times reporter Carrie Bradshaw on “Sex And The City,” Sarah Jessica Parker is an actress from Nelsonville, Ohio. She came into the world on March 25 1965 and grew up as one of eight children.
Her parents divorced when she was barely four, but that early mishap did not stop the star from pursuing her dreams,
As she grew older, she nurtured her interests in the arts, eventually making it to Broadway and thereafter, the big screen. While fulfilling her career goals, Parker also kept her personal life afloat, tying the knot with actor Matthew Broderick in the nineties.
Like Parker, Broderick is a Hollywood A-lister, with credits in hit movies such as “The Lion King,” “Godzilla,” “Bee Movie,” and “Daybreak,” among others.
Meeting on Broadway
Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick first met in 1991 following the actress’ breakup from Robert Downey Jr. At the time, two of her brothers Pippin and Toby helped kickstart the Naked Angels Theater company.
Broderick directed a play with the company and shortly afterward, Parker’s brothers introduced him to the actress. The two hit it off instantly, but it took six months for Broderick to man up and ask her out.
The 56-year-old recalled the beautiful moment in a later interview. She explained how her to-be husband asked her out via voicemail, with a “very charming, self-effacing” message. Thus began their romance.
About five years into their relationship, Parker and Broderick appeared on stage together for the first time. They co-starred on the Broadway production of “How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying”
Ahead of the stage appearance, Parker admitted how nervous she felt at having to appear alongside him on stage. Notwithstanding, the duo pulled it off seamlessly, rendering a groundbreaking performance.
A Surprise Wedding!
Barely one year after their first joint work, Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick tied the knot in a wedding no one saw coming. The couple sent out invitation cards inviting their select few for a party.
The 100 guests lucky enough to grace the occasion at New York’s Angel Orensanz Synagogue only realized it was a wedding at the last minute.
In front of their stunned guests, the lovebirds tied the knot on May 19, 1997, with Parker donning a black dress.
Becoming Parents
The couple lived in marital bliss for about five years before they began to expand their family. First, they welcomed their son, James Broderick in October 2002.
Seven years later, the duo became parents again when their twin daughters Marion and Tabitha arrived in 2009. Notably, Sarah Jessica Parker welcomed her two younger children via surrogate.
Parker has been open about how much she cherished motherhood. In fact, she once admitted if given a chance to revisit one moment from her past, it’d be the births of her kids.
Hitting The 20 Years Milestone
The Hollywood power couple hit an important milestone in their marriage in 2017; they celebrated their 20th anniversary.
Deviating from her usual private approach, the star took to Instagram to pay tribute to her handsome prince charming. She also acknowledged her love for the father of three.
Keeping It Private In Hollywood
Throughout their years together, Parker and Broderick have kept their marriage under wraps, letting out little to the public. The actress once attributed this privacy to their background in theater.
She explained that they came from a different time when working as an actor was about giving your best. However, in a world where acting meant attaining celebrity status, they felt no pressure or obligation to let out personal details about themselves.
The duo also felt no obligation to respond to allegations or gossip. Their approach has paid off in the long run, as Parker and Broderick are among a few Hollywood A-listers whose marriage have evaded scandals, and even fewer to stick it out for over two decades.
A Life Of Fame
They had another chance to work together in February 2020 when they returned to the theater for a pre-Broadway run of Neil Simon’s “Plaza Suite.” Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the couple rescheduled the official opening date for March 28, 2022.
Prior to that, the pair admittedly ruled out the possibility of ever working together in their production. When the chance finally came, Parker described the experience as incredibly pleasant.
On how they made their relationship work for over two decades despite their lives in the spotlight, Parker noted that keeping a professional distance has somewhat benefitted them.
“The Sex And The City” actress explained how having a career that constantly allowed them to be away and come back together availed them so much to share.
The Secret To Their Lasting Union
In September 2018, Parker opened up about the key to keeping their marriage strong. According to her, their refusal to talk about their marriage, which helps keep it nice and private, was key to staying strong.
However, Broderick, who regards his wife as his best friend, has a different opinion. In a November 2020 interview, the actor admitted he didn’t know the secret to a successful marriage.
He later revealed their marriage had no secret. He was simply content loving his wife and being very grateful to her.
Notably, Parker shares that immense gratitude. During Broderick’s 59th birthday in March 2021, the “Divorce” alum took to Instagram to pay a touching tribute to him, revealing how grateful she was that he was born into the world and ultimately became her husband.
These two lovebirds certainly have a lot going for them in the love department and beyond. And it’s all thanks to their undying love, which began on Broadway and is being sustained through their shared passion for Broadway.
