“If you notice or feel any compressions or uneven spots, rotate your mattress,” says Laura Scott Troyano of Avocado Green Brands. She says Avocado mattresses, in particular, should be rotated frequently at first and less often over time.

“To prevent body impressions, spin your mattress—head to foot—once every month for the first six months. It will take five-plus rotations to ensure even distribution,” Troyano says. “After the first six months, rotating every other month ensures even wear over the lifespan of the mattress.”

Experts agree that you should maintain good cleaning practices for the mattress and rotate it frequently. To make this chore easier to remember, time your mattress cleaning with flipping or rotating so you can do everything at the same time. 

Which Type of Mattress Is Best?

The optimal type of mattress for you is determined by your specific tastes and needs. The best mattress type varies widely from person to person. For example, if you prefer a more classic feel and bounce in your mattress, innerspring mattresses may be your best option.

How Often Should You Change Your Mattress?

According to Shelby Harris, a clinical psychologist and sleep specialist, the sort of material used to make it determines when it should be replaced. Latex should be changed in 10–15 years. Memory foam requires that low-quality mattresses should be replaced after around five years.

Higher-quality ones can be replaced every eight to ten years. Innerspring should be changed from five to ten years. Hybrid materials should be replaced every seven to ten years.

However, there are other reasons you may need to replace it besides the number of years you’ve had it. “Our bodies change, too. [We] gain weight, lose weight, or have to sleep in a different position for a variety of reasons, including pain, surgery, and so on,” Harris explains. “You want to see if it is accommodating those changes.”
