Since rising to fame in 2002, Kelly Clarkson has faced criticism about her weight. However, what does Kelly Clarkson weigh?
When Kelly Clarkson won the first edition of “American Idol” in 2002, she engraved her name into American TV show history. For her accomplishments, Clarkson won a million-dollar record deal with RCA. In addition to that, she became a national celebrity overnight.
However, handling fame was a new concept for someone who had supported herself working a couple of odd jobs months prior. Clarkson had to understand her private life would now be open to the media. Also, her every move would be closely monitored and scrutinized, which are all the perks accompanying fame.
Nevertheless, it did not take long for her to get a taste of facing criticism. In 2015, British journalist Katie Hopkins took to Twitter to question Clarkson’s weight. The singer had a child one year prior, and Hopkins questioned if she had eaten all her backup singers.
The journalist noted that a year after childbirth, Clarkson no longer had baby weight but cake weight. However, as soon as Clarkson’s fans noticed Hopkins’ tweet, they accused the journalist of fat-shaming the singer. Yet, Hopkins defended her tweets, noting:
“There is no such thing as fat-shaming. There is only skinny-blaming. It doesn’t hurt me if I hurt someone’s feelings. Ultimately, if you put yourself out there if you’re in the media, if you’re in the public eye, then you have to accept what comes your way.”
Meanwhile, when asked about Hopkins’ comments, Clarkson noted that the journalist does not know her. She also stated that Hopkins’ comments did not bother her because she is awesome.
The singer explained it’s a free world and people have the freedom to say whatever; she just doesn’t care what people think. Clarkson also pointed out that she felt happy and confident, and since becoming a parent, she doesn’t seek anyone’s acceptance.
How Much Does Kelly Clarkson Weigh?
After winning “American Idol” in 2002, Clarkson became engrossed in raising her profile in the music industry. She went on tours and spent many hours recording music and promoting them after its release.
Amidst all these commitments, Clarkson lost track of her health and started gaining weight. Finally, however, she decided to lose some of the enormous weight she had gained after a while.
Although she is not a fan of going to the gym or working out, Clarkson was able to shed weight mainly by eating organic food. She also reduced how she ate and drank and the quality of what she ingested.
The singer successfully lost 40 pounds, bringing her weight down to 154 pounds from 194 pounds. However, like most adults, her weight sometimes fluctuates.
Clarkson’s Thyroid Problems Led to Weight Loss
Despite the criticism Clarkson received during the early stages of fame due to her weight, the musician remained steadfast in her self-belief. She was also very open about her weight and did not shy away from addressing whatever comments or criticism.
However, when Clarkson appeared in the summer of 2018, fans and media personalities noticed she looked slimmer. Also, while addressing reporters during the 2018 CMT Music Awards, she disclosed that she was sticking to a diet plan. The musician stated:
“I’m not working out! I literally read this book. It’s called The Plant Paradox. It’s basically about how we cook our food, non-GMO, no pesticides, eating really organic.”
Afterward, during an interview with Hoda Kotb, Clarkson revealed that weight loss was not the primary motivation behind her lifestyle change. Instead, according to her, the new restrictive diet was to combat another health issue.
Clarkson explained she had an autoimmune disease and a thyroid problem that started in 2006. Although the industry loves her new looks, Clarkson’s intention was not generally about it.
‘Skinny isn’t Healthy,’ says Clarkson
While speaking to “Glamour UK,” Clarkson explained that she felt more pressure from people when she was thin. The singer stated that she was thin, and people in the music industry wanted her to look like other celebrities.
During an interview with Reebok after debuting her slimmer look, Clarkson discussed her weight issues. The musician, who has always been open about her weight, disclosed she doesn’t equate being skinny with being healthy. She said:
“It’s when I’m fat that I’m happy. People think, ‘Oh, there’s something wrong with her. She’s putting on weight,’ ‘I’m like, ‘Oh, no! I’m sorry, but that represents happiness in my emotional world.’ For me, when I’m skinny is usually when I’m not doing well.”
Meanwhile, Clarkson also encouraged people to live their bodies how it is. Although people might experience things that would make them insecure, they should strive to remain confident.
According to her, the same traits that make people feel insecure are what make them who they are. However, the musician proclaimed she felt very confident and had to find that in herself.
