A fire recently gutted an apartment building in Georgia. Ten people are now displaced, and one woman who lived in the building had to jump from a window to safety. Thankfully, there was no loss of life or injuries.
In the early hours of Sunday, firefighters in Sandy Springs, Georgia, received reports of a fire at the Rosemont Dunwoody Apartments. According to Atlanta’s WSBTV, fire crews responded to the scene at about 4:15 A.M.
The firefighters quickly put out the fire and accessed the scene to understand the extent of damage and if anyone was hurt. Sandy Springs Fire Chief Keith Sanders told the press that no one was injured in the fire, but it ripped through four of the eight units in the building.
When the fire crews arrived, they found one apartment downstairs and another upstairs on fire. According to the police, the fire apparently started in the downstairs apartment and spread upward. “The bulk of the fire was hailed to the two apartments. So it was contained at two apartments; the one upstairs and downstairs. The rest of the damage was primarily smoke and water damage, making sure the fire didn’t spread because it was a common attic all throughout those apartments right there,” Captain Scott Powell of the Atlanta Fire Rescue said. “So that was the main cause for additional damage to the units.”

When the fire crews first arrived on the scene, thick smoke was billowing from the buildings. As they worked to put out the fire quickly, the Sandy Springs police evacuated residents to safety. Also, a woman on the second floor was seated by her window, shouting for help. Two brothers heroically helped her escape the inferno through the window.
“There was a woman who was just sitting right by the window, and she was trying to breathe air from the window. We got a blanket, and she just jumped right over, and we caught her,” Yogi Patel, one of the brothers, told Atlanta News First.

Another resident, Jose Ramirez, was also affected by the fire. He told Atlanta News First that throughout the morning, he had been to salvage as much of his belongings as possible. “I just have to recover from this,” he said. “Everything is flooded in there. The ceiling is collapsing.”
Furthermore, Ramirez’s relentless search paid off. After long hours of going through his damaged apartment, he couldn’t get some of his property, but he found his cat alive. He expressed his gratitude for the fire not hurting his pet.

In addition, Red Cross workers were also on the scene to help the affected residents and assist the fire crew and police. “Buildings can be rebuilt, but lives cannot be restored,” Sanders told WSBTV. Although the police have yet to disclose the cause of the fire, they are investigating the incident as a possible arson.
According to the police, someone saw a suspected arsonist leaving the scene. However, the police arrested the suspect and took him into custody for questioning. So far, there hasn’t been any official follow-up statement from the police.
