Who Was George Jones?

George Jones was a country singer and songwriter born and raised in Texas on September 12, 1931. He achieved international fame thanks to his long list of hit records, including his best-known song, “He Stopped Loving Her Today.”

George was frequently called the greatest living country singer during his extensive career and for good reason. His record includes 160 chart singles from 1955 until his demise in 2013.

How Many Wives Did George Jones Have?

George Jones married four different women while he was alive. The first woman he ever married was Dorothy Bonvillion. Their wedding happened in 1950, but it lasted only a year before they went their separate ways. They got divorced in 1951.

After that, he got married to a woman named Shirley Ann Corley. They tied the knot in 1954; the union lasted three years before it ended in 1968.

When that marriage crashed, George went a year without having a wife. Then he met one woman, Tammy Wynette, whose spirit he melded with so well they could never be entirely apart until her demise.

Were Tammy Wynette and George Jones Married?

Yes, George Jones did get married to Tammy Wynette. Like him, she was a country music singer, and Wynette became George Jones’ spouse in 1969. It is even widely believed that her famous song “Stand By Your Man” was about him.

While together, Wynette and George were seen as country music’s royal couple. The relationship led to the birth of one daughter, Georgette Jones. She was born in 1970, some years before the couple chose to call it quits in 1975.

The relationship ended because George struggled with substance abuse, but they never wholly closed their hearts to each other. Even after the divorce, they remained in contact and continued to make music together in the following decades.

Who Was George Jones Married to Before His Demise?

George’s substance abuse ended his marriage to Wynette, but he kept at it even after the divorce. Years of drinking harmed his health and caused him to miss several shows.

Ultimately, it won him the moniker “No Show Jones.” Of course, it did not stop the talented singer from finding love again in Nancy Sepulvado. He married her in 1983, and she remained by his side until his passing. However, they never had any children together.

How Many Children Did George Jones Have?

George welcomed a total of four kids while he lived. His eldest child is a daughter named Susan Jones Smith. She was born in 1950, and he shares her with his first wife, Dorothy.

The late singer welcomed two sons, Bryan and Jeffrey, with his second wife, Shirley. However, his fourth child was a daughter named Georgette, whom he had with Wynette.

George Jones Death

The health crisis that led to George’s death started on April 18, 2013, when he was hospitalized for a slight fever and irregular blood pressure. As a result of his hospitalization, his concerts in Alabama and Salem were postponed in hopes that he would return soon.

That was not to be because George passed away on April 26, 2013, after six days in the ICU. He was 81. His death saddened his fans worldwide, but his impact on music and the lives around him has not been forgotten.

Many new-generation country singers have cited him as an inspiration, and when his fans talk about him, it is with continued reverence for the time he spent on earth. Other country singers who have left their marks and passed on include Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, and Patsy Cline.
