Ever been on a flight where a family needs to sit together but fellow passengers won’t agree to let go of their seats? Well, Mitra Amirzadeh, a flight attendant from Orlando, has a pretty clever trick up her sleeve which she uses to get families to sit together. She shared the secret of her method to The Wall Street Journal.
When you have tried and tried and a child is caught in the middle of the seat-switching trouble, Mitra doesn’t give up easily. Not at all!, she rallies other passengers. She calls out to other passengers to volunteer to lend a hand to these families.
And here’s the one other thing, if someone is being particularly stubborn, Mitra gives them a unique punishment. She’ll designate them as the honorary entertainers for those soon to be bored but energetic children.
“I have said before, ‘OK, so you’re going to watch the toddler?’”“You’ll want their snacks and their coloring books then, because they’re going to need that,” in effect making those who won’t swap with parents the babysitters for all the duration of the journey.

Although Mitra does not always step in every time there’s a seating issue. When she finds out that it’s just a couple wanting to sit together and cozy up, she tends to stay out of it. She doesn’t want to “force” paying customers to always bend to her seat-swapping technique.
Ms Amirzadeh added: “The next time you feel yourself getting angry or getting frustrated that you’re not getting the seat you want, you need to remind yourself that you didn’t pay to pick your seat. Otherwise, you’d be in it.” It’s a gentle reminder to always keep the peace with others when you are flying.

Mitra shares that customers not wanting to swap seats with families happens quite often. She estimates that she has to use this technique about 80 percent of the time each month. Seems like seat-switching troubles are going up just as these airlines are hiking up their fees for pre-booked seats.
In February, a passenger was defended after he refused to give up a business-class plane seat for an economy. The Reddit user shared an incident where a woman sitting next to him in business class asked him to voluntarily downgrade his seat so that she could sit next to her husband, who was seated in economy.
Another woman was praised last March for refusing to switch seats on a flight so a family could sit together. Audrey Peters posted a TikTok after that story had gone viral and captioned it: “No I’m not switching for a middle seat, book your flights earlier babes.”
