It’s countdown time as the biggest night of fashion is officially a few weeks away. It’s the Met Gala 2025! The gala will be held on Monday, May 5, at the same venue as the previous years, The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, USA.
The Met Gala, also known as the Costume Institute Benefit, is a charity fundraising event held for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in Manhattan that has been around since 1948. It is particularly famous because it is an annual ball that serves as a glamorous arena of high fashion to recognize the East Coast’s influence on celebrity and culture.
Organizers have traditionally timed the gala to coincide with the opening of the institute’s annual fashion exhibition. They hold the event every year on the first Monday in May and raise eight-figure sums annually.
Brand sponsors like Louis Vuitton make the exhibition and event benefits possible. Instagram, the Hobson/Lucas Family Foundation, Africa Fashion International (founded by Dr. Precious Moloi-Motsepe), and The Perry Foundation also provide major funding.
What Exactly Happens at the Met Gala?
The Met Gala is popularly referred to as the most prestigious and glamorous fashion event in the world and is one of the biggest star-studded events of the year. Organizers keep the event fairly mysterious, maintain strict privacy, and enforce a set of rigid rules.
Like “No smoking,” “No sitting next to your spouse,” and “No phone (and, therefore, no social media)” once guests have entered the museum.

Usually, once guests arrive at the event, they are led inside and around the museum through the Costume Institute’s exhibit and then allowed to mingle for a cocktail hour. Then next is the run-of-show performance at the event, which involves a formal dinner.
Chef Kwame Onwuachi—of the restaurants Tatiana in Lincoln Center and Dōgon in Washington, DC—and a high-profile performer (or two) will oversee the exclusive dinner at the Met Gala 2025. Guests will also always have a moment to explore the exhibition.
What Is the Met Gala Theme for 2025?
At the 2025 Met Gala, stars will walk up the iconic steps at the Metropolitan Museum of Art to celebrate and showcase their depictions of the Costume Institute’s new exhibition themed “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.”
The theme for last year’s 2024 Met Gala was “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” while that of the 2023 Met Gala honored Karl Lagerfeld. Lagerfeld was a regular attendee at The Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute.
What Is the Dress Code for the 2025 Met Gala?
The 2025 Met Gala has set the dress code as “Tailored for You,” spotlighting the cultural significance of Black tailoring throughout history. The exhibition will focus on Black styles and, more specifically, high-end menswear, exploring the idea of the “Black dandy” and suiting that’s sure to bring out the impeccable creativity of this year’s attendees.
According to Vogue, the curators organized the exhibition into 12 sections, each representing a characteristic that defines dandy style: ownership, presence, distinction, disguise, freedom, champion, respectability, jook, heritage, beauty, cool, and cosmopolitanism.
